Editorial illustration of a Turkish truck route line crossing Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary, with diesel price and toll markers at each border crossing

The Balkan route for a truck from Turkey to Europe runs through Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary, or through Greece, and among the EU countries on it diesel is cheapest in Bulgaria at 1.884 EUR per litre against 2.126 EUR in Greece in the week of 2026-10-19 ( fuel-prices.eu ). That gap of 0.242 EUR per litre is only one line on the bill. Hungary indexed its truck toll in 2026, Serbia made the ETC TAG mandatory for trucks, and Schengen refusals at Kapikule have turned driver days into a planning limit. This guide puts diesel, tolls, border throughput and driver-day rules side by side, so a Turkish dispatcher can cost a Balkan run before quoting it.

Which Balkan route should a truck from Turkey take to Europe?

Three Turkish crossings feed the Balkan route, and they differ in diesel and toll cost more than in distance. Kapikule leads into Bulgaria at Kapitan Andreevo, Hamzabeyli leads into Bulgaria at Lesovo, and Ipsala leads into Greece. The two Bulgarian crossings then converge on the same road network toward Kalotina on the Serbian border.

From Kalotina, trucks cross Serbia and leave it at Horgos, where the Hungarian side is Roszke. That is the classic Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary line. The Greek alternative uses Egnatia Odos, the motorway between the Turkish border region of Evros and Igoumenitsa on the Ionian coast ( To Vima ). Romania sits next to this corridor as a third option, and its diesel price is covered in the table below.

The route choice therefore comes down to four costs: diesel, tolls, border time and driver days. The next sections price each one with dated sources and flag where no verified figure exists.

How much is diesel in Greece, Bulgaria and Hungary?

Greece 2.126 EUR against Bulgaria 1.884 EUR, EU bulletin data via fuel-prices.eu

In the week of 2026-10-19, diesel cost 1.884 EUR per litre in Bulgaria, 1.951 EUR in Hungary and 2.126 EUR in Greece. These EU figures come from fuel-prices.eu, which reports prices from the European Commission Weekly Oil Bulletin ( fuel-prices.eu ). Bulgaria is the cheapest EU country on the route, and Greece is the most expensive.

Turkey, Serbia and North Macedonia are outside the EU bulletin. For those, GlobalPetrolPrices publishes the same-week prices in USD per litre only: 1.951 USD for Turkey, 1.802 USD for North Macedonia and 2.258 USD for Serbia. The table converts them at about 1.125 USD per EUR, the rate implied by comparing the two sources for Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary and Romania.

Treat the "about" rows as estimates, not published prices. They are pump prices converted by our own calculation, and a fleet card will price differently. The ranking is consistent across both sources, which is the part a dispatcher should rely on.

Where should a Turkish truck buy diesel on the Balkan route?

Buy as much as the tank range allows in Turkey, top up in Bulgaria, and avoid paying Serbian pump prices if the next fill is in Hungary. The arithmetic below uses an assumed purchase of 500 litres and the table prices above.

  • Turkey versus Bulgaria: about 865 EUR in Turkey against 942 EUR in Bulgaria, a difference of about 77 EUR.
  • Bulgaria versus Serbia: 942 EUR against about 1,005 EUR, so a Serbian fill costs about 63 EUR more.
  • Bulgaria versus Greece: 942 EUR against 1,063 EUR, a gap of 121 EUR per 500 litres.
  • Bulgaria versus Hungary: 942 EUR against 975.50 EUR, a gap of 33.50 EUR.

The Greek route pays the biggest diesel penalty, and a driver who must refuel there should plan a smaller fill and buy again in Bulgaria or Hungary where the route allows. Live country prices are on the fuel price map , and the weekly bulletin figures move by a few cents, so check before each departure. These are pump prices for planning, and card discounts, volume contracts and surcharges change the invoice.

What do trucks pay in tolls in Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary and Greece?

Each country uses a different toll system, and only Bulgaria and Hungary have verified 2026 tariff changes for trucks over 3.5 t, while Serbia changed its equipment and enforcement rules. No single operator covers the route, so a toll budget is the sum of four separate tariffs.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria charges trucks over 3.5 t per kilometre under Decree 64/2026, in force since 2026-06-01. On the motorway rate for Class 1, the BG Toll tariff lists 0.08 for 3.5 to 12 t at Euro VI, 0.14 for vehicles over 12 t with two or three axles at Euro VI, and 0.21 for vehicles over 12 t with four or more axles at Euro VI. The same four-axle band costs 0.26 at Euro V. The page prints bare numbers, and we read them as EUR per km in line with the distance-based design.

A worked example shows why engine class matters. Over a hypothetical 100 km of Class 1 motorway, a combination with four or more axles pays 21 EUR at Euro VI and 26 EUR at Euro V, about 24% more for the older engine. A full cost breakdown by class is in our Bulgaria truck toll rates per km guide.

Hungary

Hungary raised the HU-GO truck toll by 4.3% on 2026-01-01. The operator had also announced a second step for 2026-03-01 that would have lifted the charge by 35% over 2025 for vehicles over 3.5 t ( HU-GO , December 2025), but decree 2/2026 (II.26.) ÉKM cancelled that step before it took effect. A Hungarian toll bill of 1,000 EUR in 2025 is therefore about 1,043 EUR on the same journeys in 2026.

We did not find a verified per-km table by vehicle category, so use the HU-GO calculator for your exact class and axle count before quoting.

Serbia

Serbia requires an ETC TAG (an electronic toll collection device) on trucks from 2026-01-01, and penalties apply from 2026-07-01. For companies the fine ranges from 500,000 to 2,000,000 RSD, and for the responsible person from 10,000 to 100,000 RSD ( Putevi Srbije , 2026-05-27). The same notice describes barrier-free tolling (multi-lane free flow, with no barriers to stop at) on the Belgrade bypass, and it refers to a transition for full implementation. Confirm the enforcement status with Putevi Srbije before each departure, and fit the TAG before the truck reaches Kalotina.

We found no published Serbian truck rates per km for the Horgos corridor, so budget from your toll operator's current statement.

Greece

Egnatia Odos moved to a new concession on 2026-01-01. Reported pricing is 0.04 EUR per km plus VAT, and the car price for the full route rose from 24.45 EUR to 30.45 EUR ( To Vima , 2025-12-31). That figure is for cars. We did not find a verified 2026 truck figure, so request the current truck tariff from the concessionaire.

How long are the border queues at Kapikule, Kalotina and Horgos?

We found no official waiting-time page for these crossings, but the Turkish Trade Ministry publishes daily truck counts for the three Turkish crossings. On 2026-10-22, Kapikule handled 1,298 trucks entering Turkey and 939 leaving, while the average from 2026-10-01 to 2026-10-22 was 1,184 entering and 944 leaving ( Trakya Customs and Trade Regional Directorate , published 2026-10-23).

CrossingTrucks entering Turkey, 2026-10-22Trucks leaving Turkey, 2026-10-22Total
Kapikule1,2989392,237
Hamzabeyli6447241,368
Ipsala350227577

Kapikule carried 2,237 of the 4,182 trucks across the three crossings that day, just over half. That concentration is why a queue there makes news, and why Hamzabeyli and Ipsala are worth pricing as alternatives when Kapikule is saturated. Remember that counts measure throughput, not waiting time. A high count can mean a fast crossing or a long queue that is being processed.

For Kalotina, Horgos and Roszke we found no official waiting-time figures, and no throughput counts at all for Horgos and Roszke. Use your border agent and driver reports, and read how to check the Kapikule queue before departure for the live sources dispatchers use.

Can Turkish drivers stay within the Schengen 90/180 limit?

Turkish drivers must stay within the Schengen 90/180 rule (no more than 90 days in any rolling 180-day period), and the Turkish carriers' association UND says about 25,000 of roughly 50,000 Turkish international drivers are affected ( Hurriyet Daily News , 2026-09-24). The same report describes refusals at Kapikule and at Trieste, and says inspections intensified over the previous two months.

The economic stakes are large: the article puts goods moved by road to the EU in 2025 at about 111 billion USD. We found no driver exemption in the sources reviewed, so a dispatcher should treat the limit as binding. For the political dispute behind it, see our explainer on the Western Balkans Schengen blockade .

In practice, two habits protect a run. Count each driver's days in the Schengen area on a rolling basis, and keep trip records that match the tachograph so a border officer can verify entry and exit dates. Rotate drivers before the last days of a window, because a refusal at the border costs more than a planned swap.

Which Bulgarian public holidays in 2026 affect a run?

Bulgaria has 15 public holiday dates in 2026, and the year closes with a three-day run on 24, 25 and 26 December. The full list is: 1 and 2 January, 3 March, 10 to 13 April (Orthodox Easter), 1 May, 6 May, 24 May, 6 September, 22 September, and 24 to 26 December. The dates come from the Bulgaria 2026 holiday calendar ; confirm them against the Labour Code or the Official Gazette before committing to a delivery slot.

Dispatchers should check consignee and agent opening hours around these dates, because a missed slot adds a waiting day to a route that already carries driver-day pressure.

Planning checklist for dispatchers

A Balkan run is costed best when every line has a source and a date. Use this list before sending a quote.

  1. Price diesel from the latest weekly bulletin figures, and mark any derived Turkish, Serbian or North Macedonian price as an estimate.
  2. Plan the main fill in Turkey or Bulgaria and keep Greek and Serbian fills small.
  3. Check the vehicle's Euro class against the BG Toll tariff, since Euro V costs 24% more per km than Euro VI in the over 12 t band with four or more axles.
  4. Add the Hungarian 4.3% indexation of 2026-01-01 to any 2025 toll baseline, then confirm the exact class in the HU-GO calculator.
  5. Confirm the ETC TAG is fitted and active for Serbia before the truck leaves Bulgaria.
  6. Request the current Egnatia truck tariff in writing if the Greek route is in play.
  7. Count each driver's Schengen days and rotate before the limit.
  8. Confirm bilateral permit and quota status with your association, since we found no verified 2026 quota figures for Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece or Serbia.

Frequently asked questions

What is the diesel price in Bulgaria for trucks?

Diesel cost 1.884 EUR per litre in Bulgaria in the week of 2026-10-19, the lowest among the EU countries on this route ( fuel-prices.eu ). That is a pump price. Fleet cards, volume contracts and station location can move the invoice price.

Is diesel cheaper in Greece or Bulgaria?

Bulgaria is cheaper. In the week of 2026-10-19, Greek diesel was 2.126 EUR per litre and Bulgarian diesel was 1.884 EUR, a difference of 0.242 EUR per litre. On a 500-litre fill, that is 121 EUR.

How long is the truck queue at Kapikule?

There is no official waiting-time figure. The Turkish Trade Ministry publishes daily truck counts, which showed 1,298 trucks entering Turkey and 939 leaving at Kapikule on 2026-10-22. Counts show throughput only, so confirm waiting time with your agent or driver before departure.

Do Turkish truck drivers fall under the Schengen 90/180 rule?

Yes. UND says about 25,000 of roughly 50,000 Turkish international drivers are affected, and refusals were reported at Kapikule and Trieste in September 2026. We found no exemption for drivers in the sources reviewed, so count days per driver.

How much did the HU-GO truck toll rise in 2026?

HU-GO raised the charge by 4.3% on 2026-01-01. A second step planned for 2026-03-01, which would have lifted the toll by 35% over 2025, was cancelled by decree 2/2026 (II.26.) ÉKM. Per-category rates are in the HU-GO calculator.

Do trucks need an ETC TAG in Serbia?

Yes. Serbia made the ETC TAG mandatory for trucks from 2026-01-01, with penalties from 2026-07-01 of 500,000 to 2,000,000 RSD for companies. Putevi Srbije also refers to a transition for full implementation, so verify the current enforcement status before departure.
