EU truck tolls 2027 change mostly on 2027-01-01: the Netherlands ends a temporary discount, Lithuania starts a distance-based toll, Slovakia moves to a state-run system with new on-board units, and the Alsace R-Pass is scheduled for the same day. From that date a Euro VI truck over 32 t pays 20.6 cents/km in the Netherlands, according to RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority, in its announcement of 2026-08-20 . This guide gives each country's change with its date, its published rate where one exists, and how far we trust the source. It also lists the countries where a change was reported but is not coming, so you do not plan around it.

Which EU truck toll changes take effect in 2027?

Four countries or regions have a dated change backed by an official or operator source, three more have a change that rests on a draft or a single report, and Croatia and Sweden appear in one article only. The table is the summary, and the confidence column reflects what we could verify as of 2026-10-24.

Read the confidence column before you build a tariff model. The Dutch, Lithuanian and Slovak rows rest on official or operator material. Denmark is a draft that needs a parliamentary vote, Belgium comes from one trade report, and Croatia and Sweden come from one article with no official page behind it.

What happens to Dutch truck toll rates on 2027-01-01?

Dutch rates rise by roughly a third on 2027-01-01, because two things happen at once. The temporary 22.3% discount on the vrachtwagenheffing (the Dutch truck charge) runs from 2026-09-01 to 2026-12-31, and RDW states that rates then return to standard with 2.6% indexation on top. A Euro VI diesel truck over 32,000 kg pays 20.6 cents/km, and the electric equivalent pays 4.0 cents/km.

Dutch Euro VI diesel truck over 32 t, from 2027-01-01

20.6 cents/km

Announced by RDW on 2026-08-20; the electric equivalent pays 4.0 cents/km.

Trans.info, citing the IRU , puts the discounted rate for a Euro VI truck over 32 t in CO2 class 1 at 15.6 cents/km. Over 10,000 km on Dutch roads, 15.6 cents/km costs 1,560 EUR and 20.6 cents/km costs 2,060 EUR. That is 500 EUR more, or about 32%.

One caution on the numbers. RDW said in August that the official 2027 amounts were not yet set, and we did not find their publication in the Staatscourant (the Dutch official gazette). Treat 20.6 cents/km as announced, and check the rates page again before you finalise a Dutch quote.

How do Lithuania and Slovakia change on 2027-01-01?

Lithuania starts a new distance-based toll and Slovakia moves to a state-run system with new in-cab devices. Both start on 2027-01-01, and Slovakia has the shorter preparation window because registration opens on 2026-12-01.

Lithuania: how much will Via Toll cost per km?

Via Toll starts on 2027-01-01, and the operator, Via Lietuva , states that multi-month vignettes stopped selling on 2026-07-01 and that fines run from 700 to 1,000 EUR. The Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration, quoted by the national broadcaster LRT on 2026-07-01, puts the average for a Euro 6 vehicle with up to three axles and over 12 t at 11.1 cents/km.

A three-axle rigid truck covering 5,000 km on tolled Lithuanian roads would therefore pay about 555 EUR at the average. Vehicles with more axles fall into higher bands, and we did not find the CO2-class tiers on an official page, so check the operator's table for your exact configuration. The IRU expects Lithuanian toll revenue to rise from about 70 million EUR to 110 million EUR, as reported by trans.info. Our Lithuania Via Toll rates post goes deeper on the grid.

Slovakia: do hauliers need a new on-board unit?

Yes. Cargo Magazín reported on 2026-10-14 that each vehicle needs a new OBU (on-board unit, the in-cab device that records tolled kilometres), that registration starts on 2026-12-01, and that rates and the road network stay the same. That leaves one month between the start of registration and the switch, so a fleet of 50 trucks needs a registration plan in November.

The only confirmation of unchanged 2027 rates we found is that trade report, so we have not printed per-km figures here. If your fleet uses EETS (the European Electronic Toll Service, one contract and one device for several national systems), note that the Slovak motorway company NDS states existing EETS users need no new registration, and ask your provider what it covers in Slovakia. The details sit in our Slovakia's new toll system guide.

Is the Alsace R-Pass really starting on 2027-01-01?

The operator says yes, but a union appeal means the date is not guaranteed. The R-Pass operator for the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace gives a start of 2027-01-01 for poids lourds (heavy goods vehicles) over 3.5 t. Total Euro VI rates are 7.4 centimes/km for 3.5 to 12 t, 8.8 for 12 to 18 t, 11.5 for 18 to 32 t, and 14.6 for vehicles over 32 t. EETS users with more than 20 trips per month get 13% off the infrastructure part.

For a 40 t combination, 50 km on tolled Alsace roads costs 7.30 EUR at 14.6 centimes/km. The FNTR transport union filed a suspensive appeal on 2025-12-22, according to Le Journal des entreprises, and we found no ruling or postponement as of 2026-10-24. Price R-Pass into Alsace lanes from January, and re-read the operator's tariff page before you send final rates. The full grid is in our Alsace R-Pass guide.

Will Denmark, Belgium, Romania, Croatia or Sweden change anything in early 2027?

Possibly, but the evidence is weaker than for the first four. Each country below has a different caveat, so we take them one at a time.

Denmark: a draft starting 2027-01-05

Denmark's km toll has applied to trucks of 12 t and over since 2025-01-01, according to vejafgifter.dk . The operator says trucks over 3.5 t are expected to join from 2027-01-05, but only if Parliament passes the bill. The start is 5 January, not 1 January, and it is a draft. We do not print per-km rates for the extension because they are not final. The same page says the whole public road network, about 75,000 km, is to be covered from 2028-01-01.

Belgium: Flanders indexes early

Econostrum reports that Flanders raises its km charge by 3.86% from the start of 2027 (brought forward from July), citing Viapass, the Belgian km-charge body. Wallonia indexes on 2027-01-01 at a rate not yet known, and Brussels does not index its general tariffs. This is one secondary source and we found no Viapass release, so use it for budgeting only. On a Flemish km-charge bill of 10,000 EUR a month, 3.86% adds 386 EUR.

Romania: TollRo moves to OBU and EETS

For Romania, trans.info reports that a Euro VI vehicle of 12 t and over pays 0.48 RON/km on motorways and about half that on national roads. Payment by route ticket or app is said to continue until 2027-01-15, after which OBUs and EETS take over. The deadline comes from that one source, so treat it as provisional.

Croatia and Sweden: single-source reports

The same trans.info article, which attributes the items to the IRU, reports free-flow tolling in Croatia and a vignette for goods vehicles over 3.5 t in Sweden, both from March 2027. We found no rates and no official page for either. The European Commission says vignettes on the TEN-T network are to be phased out by 2030 with exceptions, so the Swedish item is worth watching.

What is not changing in 2027?

Switzerland, Germany and Bulgaria have no 2027 rate change that we could verify. Dropping them from your model is as useful as adding the changes above.

Switzerland: the LSVA rise was rejected

The LSVA (the Swiss heavy vehicle fee) will not rise on 2027-01-01. Motion 25.3956, which proposed the increase, was adopted by the National Council in March 2026, but the Council of States treated it as rejected without a vote in early June 2026, per Swiss Parliament news of 2026-06-03 . Reports from 2025 of a rise in 2027 are out of date.

A separate bill on electric trucks did pass the Council of States by 35 votes to 8, with rebates of at least 70% in 2031 and at least 50% in 2032, and it now returns to the National Council. Current rates are in our Switzerland LSVA rates post.

Germany and Bulgaria: no 2027 change found

For Germany, we found no announced rate change. The CO2 component of 200 EUR per tonne of CO2 has applied since 2023-12-01, and the toll has covered trucks over 3.5 t since 2024-07-01, according to the German federal government. Those are existing rules, not 2027 changes.

Bulgaria also shows no 2027 change. BG Toll lists rates for trucks over 3.5 t that apply since 2026-06-01 under Decree 64 of 2026-05-26, so the adjustment has already happened.

What should hauliers do before 2027-01-01?

Start with the lanes where a rate is confirmed, then handle the open items. These steps cover most fleets running Western and Central Europe.

  1. Rebuild Dutch cost sheets at 20.6 cents/km for Euro VI trucks over 32 t, and flag any contract priced at the discounted 15.6 cents/km.
  2. Confirm the axle count and Euro class of each truck for Lithuania, and make sure each truck is set up to pay Via Toll from 2027-01-01, because fines run from 700 to 1,000 EUR.
  3. Book Slovak OBU registration for the week of 2026-12-01.
  4. Add R-Pass to Alsace lane costs, and keep a fallback in case the appeal delays the start.
  5. Watch the Danish bill if you run vehicles between 3.5 t and 12 t.
  6. Add 3.86% to Flemish km charges, and leave a placeholder for Wallonia.
  7. Check whether your EETS provider covers the new systems. The EETS guide explains what one device can and cannot do.
  8. Review toll pass-through clauses so that changes in January reach customers without a renegotiation.

A note for Finnish hauliers

Finland has no truck tolls, according to trans.info, so a search for tiemaksut Euroopassa probably comes from Finnish hauliers working out toll costs abroad. If your trucks drive south through the Baltics, Lithuania's Via Toll is the first change in this guide that you meet on that route. Dutch and Belgian charges matter once you reach Benelux, and Denmark matters if you run vehicles over 3.5 t through it.

Frequently asked questions

When does the new truck toll start in Lithuania?

Via Toll starts on 2027-01-01. The operator, Via Lietuva, says multi-month vignettes stopped selling on 2026-07-01, and fines for non-payment run from 700 to 1,000 EUR.

How much is the truck toll in the Netherlands in 2027?

RDW has announced 20.6 cents/km for a Euro VI diesel truck over 32,000 kg, and 4.0 cents/km for the electric equivalent. That includes 2.6% indexation and the end of the 22.3% discount on 2026-12-31. Check the rates page again, because the official amounts were still to be published in August.

Is the German Maut changing in 2027?

We found no announced 2027 rate change. The toll has covered trucks over 3.5 t since 2024-07-01 and includes a CO2 component of 200 EUR per tonne of CO2 since 2023-12-01.

What is R-Pass in Alsace?

R-Pass is the heavy vehicle charge for trucks over 3.5 t on selected roads of the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace. The operator gives a start of 2027-01-01 and Euro VI rates from 7.4 to 14.6 centimes/km. A union appeal is pending, so the date is not guaranteed.

Do I need an EETS device for 2027?

No single rule covers every country. Slovakia requires a new OBU for vehicles outside EETS from 2027-01-01, and NDS says existing EETS users need no new registration, Romania is reported to move to OBUs and EETS after 2027-01-15, and Alsace gives EETS users 13% off the infrastructure part if they make more than 20 trips per month. Ask your provider which of these systems it covers.

Is the Danish truck toll extended to 3.5 tonnes?

Only as a draft. The operator says trucks over 3.5 t are expected to join from 2027-01-05 if Parliament passes the bill. Trucks of 12 t and over have paid since 2025-01-01.

Is Switzerland raising the LSVA in 2027?

No. The Council of States treated the increase motion as rejected in early June 2026, so the LSVA does not rise on 2027-01-01.
