To get an ADR certificate in Europe, you must complete an approved dangerous goods training course (minimum 24 sessions for the basic package module), pass a written exam at an authority-approved centre, and apply for the certificate through your national competent authority. The certificate is valid for five years across all ADR (the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road) signatory countries - currently more than 50 states worldwide.

What does ADR training involve and how long does it take?

ADR training is delivered by nationally accredited schools and covers hazard classification, vehicle marking and placarding, emergency procedures, and the legal framework set out in ADR 2025 - the current biennial edition, in force since 1 January 2025. The basic/packages module runs a minimum of 24 training sessions, typically spread over three to four classroom days. Candidates sit a written multiple-choice exam at an approved examination centre; a pass mark is required before the certificate is issued by the national competent authority.

Prerequisites are a valid driving licence for the vehicle category you intend to drive and, in most countries, a minimum age of 21. No prior dangerous goods experience is required. The IRU Academy accredits training institutes across Europe that deliver the programme in line with international standards ( IRU ADR driver training ).

How much does an ADR certificate cost across Europe?

Training costs vary because national authorities set their own exam fees and schools price courses independently. The table below shows typical market ranges - confirm with a local accredited school before enrolling.

Basic / packages3-4 days (min. 24 sessions) - EUR 300-500
Tank (add-on to basic)2-3 additional days - EUR 200-400 extra
Basic + tank combined5-6 days - EUR 500-900

The exam fee is usually EUR 50-150 on top of the training cost and is not always included in the school's quoted price.

Which ADR modules do you need - packages, tanks, or both?

The basic/packages module covers dangerous goods in packaged form - drums, jerrycans, and IBCs. The tank module is a separate qualification for drivers operating fixed or demountable tanks; you cannot substitute one for the other. Some cargo classes (explosives, radioactive material) require additional supplementary modules on top of the base certificate - check ADR chapter 8.2 for your specific load.

When managing cross-border ADR runs, the Logifie Driver Assistant app helps you track ADR documentation and compliance checks on the road. Public holidays can trigger loading and unloading bans for dangerous goods in several countries - check the public holiday calendar before dispatch. Frequently asked questions

Is an ADR certificate valid in all EU countries?

Yes - and beyond the EU. The certificate is recognised across all ADR contracting parties, covering every EU and EEA member state plus around 20 additional countries including the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, and Morocco. You do not need a separate certificate per country.

How often do you need to renew your ADR certificate?

ADR certificates are valid for five years. To renew, complete a shorter refresher course (typically one to two days) and pass the written exam before the expiry date. If the certificate lapses, you must retake the full initial course. Plan renewal at least two months before expiry.

Can you drive with dangerous goods without an ADR certificate?

In most cases no, but ADR chapter 1.1.3 allows quantity-based exemptions for limited and excepted quantities below defined thresholds. Commercial HGV operators carrying meaningful volumes almost always need the full certificate. Carrying above-threshold dangerous goods without a valid certificate is a serious offence in every ADR contracting state.

Does an ADR certificate increase a truck driver's salary?

In practice, yes. ADR-qualified drivers - especially those with the tank module - are in higher demand and shorter supply. Transport sector salary surveys across Western Europe indicate ADR drivers typically earn 10-20 per cent more than non-certified counterparts on equivalent routes, with the tank module commanding the largest premium.
