Foreign trucks take a ticket at the entry gate and pay at the exit by card, Viacard, cash, or a Telepass or EETS box. The toll follows distance and axle class (class 3, 4, or 5 for three or more axles). On free-flow sections there is no gate: pay online within 15 days of transit.
How does a truck pay at an Italian toll gate?
Most Italian motorways are closed systems: the driver takes a ticket at entry, pays at exit, and the amount is the class rate multiplied by kilometres driven. Autostrade per l'Italia (ASPI) uses five classes. Vehicles or convoys with more than two axles fall into class 3, 4, or 5 by axle count, and a truck with a trailer counts as one convoy. Each concessionaire section is rounded separately, so check the ASPI page on how the toll is calculated , with rates updated on 2026-01-01. For other countries, see our guide to EU road tolls for trucks .
ASPI gates accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express without a PIN, plus Fast Pay, Maestro, and Vpay debit cards. Cash works only at lanes with a cash symbol. Read the sign before you enter.
| Method | Who can use it | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| Card | Any driver, no PIN | Gates with a card sign |
| Cash | Any driver | Gates with a cash symbol |
| Viacard (bank-account version) | Companies billed monthly | Gates with a Viacard sign |
| Telepass or EETS box | Hauliers with a provider contract | Telepedaggio lanes |
| Free-flow online payment | Any driver, by plate | Pedemontana, A33, A21 link |
The bank-account Viacard is billed monthly, and A22 states that the prepaid version has not been sold since 2024-11-01. No operator page confirms whether foreign firms can open an account.
Can a foreign truck use Telepass or an EETS box in Italy?
Yes. EETS (European Electronic Toll Service) lets one provider contract cover tolls in several countries. The A22 Brennero runs dedicated SET/SIT lanes (the European and interoperable electronic toll lanes for heavy vehicles), open to providers such as DKV Euro Service, Axxes, and UnipolTech and to national Telepass devices; trucks must stay under 15 km/h at entry. Operators do not say whether every free-flow portal accepts every provider, so confirm with yours. Our EETS guide for HGVs covers contracts.
How do you pay on free-flow sections, and what if you miss the 15 days?
Free-flow sections have no gate, and the toll must be paid within 15 consecutive calendar days of the transit. Pedemontana Lombarda (A36, A59, A60) takes payment by website, app, Conto Targa, on-board device, Satispay, or Poste Italiane, and its call centre from abroad is +39 011 089 80 90. It does not use axle classes, because its FAQ sets classes by volume. After 15 days Pedemontana sends a reminder by post at 3.50 EUR per reminder, and paying it does not remove the administrative sanction. Check the Italy truck driving ban times before you plan the run.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Telepass to drive a truck on Italian motorways?
No. ASPI and A22 accept cards and cash at gates. A box only saves the stop at the gate.
What if I lose the entry ticket?
On the A22, the toll is calculated from the farthest entry station unless you prove the real entry point with receipts or invoices. We did not check other concessionaires.
What happens if I do not pay on a free-flow section?
A reminder follows after 15 days with charges, and Article 176 sanctions may apply. On Pedemontana, paying the reminder does not cancel the sanction.
Who is fined, the owner or the driver?
ASPI sends the reminder to the registered owner. ASPI puts the fine under Article 176(21) at 87 to 344 EUR plus two licence points, and it falls on the actual driver. No operator page explains enforcement on foreign plates.
