The Hungary HU-GO truck toll for a 5-axle HGV (heavy goods vehicle) on a motorway is 170.94 HUF/km gross in 2026, counting the infrastructure charge only ( HU-GO 2025 rate table plus the 4.3% indexation of 2026-01-01 ). The 35% rise planned for 2026-03-01 was cancelled, so the 4.3% step is the only 2026 increase in force, and a differentiated main-road tariff announced for 2027-01-01 still has no published rates. This guide sets out the rates by vehicle category, separates what is in force from what is announced, explains why the 400,000 HUF transit fine is not a toll fine, and works through a cost per 100 km.

Every rate below excludes the external-cost part of the toll, which HU-GO sets by emission class from EURO 0 to EURO 6. Get that part from the official calculator at utdijkalkulacio.hu before you price a lane. For the other countries on a multi-country run, the EU road tolls by country guide gives the comparison.

How does HU-GO charge trucks over 3.5 t in Hungary?

HU-GO charges per kilometre on tolled roads, and every charge has two parts: an infrastructure charge and an external-cost charge. The infrastructure charge depends on vehicle category and road type. The external-cost charge depends on emission class, from EURO 0 to EURO 6, with zero-emission vehicles at 0.00 ( HU-GO ). NTPS operates HU-GO, and the ministry (ÉKM) sets the rates by decree.

Vehicle categories follow the axle count: J2 is 2 axles, J3 is 3, J4 is 4, and J5 is 5 or more. A standard 40 t tractor-trailer combination has 5 axles, so the J5 row is the one to quote for it.

Operators pay with an on-board unit (OBU), a route ticket, or a provider of the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS). The last section before the FAQ explains how to choose.

What are the 2026 HU-GO rates per km for J2, J3, J4 and J5?

In 2026 the motorway infrastructure charge runs from 65.89 HUF/km for a 2-axle truck to 170.94 HUF/km for a truck with 5 or more axles. Main roads cost less per km. The table shows gross HUF/km, infrastructure charge only, with the external-cost charge excluded.

The 2025 column comes from the HU-GO rate table . The 2026 J2 to J4 values come from the consolidated text of decree 25/2013 (V.31.) NFM , version dated 2026-07-01, which also sets the external cost in its Annex 2.

The consolidated text we checked did not give a J5 value, so the J5 motorway figure is calculated. Multiplying 163.89 HUF/km by 1.043 gives 170.94 HUF/km. The same multiplication reproduces the J2, J3 and J4 decree values exactly (63.17 to 65.89, 100.98 to 105.32, 156.53 to 163.26), which is why we treat the J5 result as reliable. The main-road J5 value is not confirmed in the decree text, and this guide leaves it blank rather than guess. Read it from the calculator.

Road type moves the cost more than most planners expect. A J4 truck pays 163.26 HUF/km on a motorway and 102.05 HUF/km on a main road, so the motorway costs about 60% more per km. That gap is the context for the 2027 plan below.

Did the March 2026 toll increase happen?

No. The only 2026 increase in force is the 4.3% indexation from 2026-01-01, because the government cancelled the second step. HU-GO announced a rise in two stages: 4.3% on 2026-01-01 and a cumulative 35% against 2025 levels on 2026-03-01, with decree 46/2025 (XII.23.) ÉKM as the legal basis. Section 2 of that decree will not enter into force, according to section 3 of decree 2/2026 (II.26.) ÉKM, as recorded in the Nemzeti Jogszabálytár . Economx reported on 2026-02-18 that main-road tolls would not rise further from 2026-03-01.

The arithmetic agrees with the decrees. Multiplying every 2025 motorway rate by 1.043 reproduces the 2026 value to the second decimal, so no 35% layer sits on top. The same check cannot be run on main roads, because the sources we reviewed give no 2025 main-road base rates. This guide therefore quotes the 2026 main-road values from the decree text and does not state a percentage change for them.

⚠️

If a customer contract, surcharge table or tender model still carries the 35% step for Hungary, it overstates the infrastructure charge. Re-base it on the 2026 values and agree a review clause for the 2027 tariff.

What is planned for main-road tolls in 2027?

The ministry has announced differentiated main-road tolls from 2027-01-01, but as of 2026-10-24 we found no decree and no rates. According to Economx , main roads that run parallel to the motorway network will carry a different toll from main roads that motorways cannot replace, with the stated logic of moving transit traffic onto motorways. No percentage, HUF value or decree number has been published, and 2027 indexation is unconfirmed.

Treat any 2027 main-road figure you see online as a guess. For quotes that run into 2027, price motorway legs on the 2026 table, list main-road legs on a separate line, and state in the offer that Hungarian toll costs follow the published tariff from 2027-01-01. Slovakia is changing its toll system in 2027 as well, which is a second reason to keep toll lines separate in the price; the Slovakia 2027 toll system guide covers that side of the corridor.

For official news, watch hu-go.hu and the Magyar Közlöny (the Hungarian official gazette), where new decrees are published.

What is the 400,000 HUF transit-route fine, and is it a toll fine?

The 400,000 HUF fine is a traffic-rule penalty under the KRESZ (the Hungarian road traffic code), and the toll regulations do not govern it. Government decree 76/2026 (III.26.) added section 48(14a) to the KRESZ, and the fine has applied since 2026-04-11. It replaced a 100,000 HUF fine under section 48(14), so the amount is four times higher ( Trans.info, 2026-04-02 ).

The rule targets heavy trucks with no Hungarian destination that leave the designated transit network. Foreign-registered trucks may leave the network if they are heading to a Hungarian pickup or delivery point, and Hungarian plates do not exempt a pure transit run. The driver is liable, or the operator if the driver is absent, and nationality is not decisive.

A valid toll payment does not protect you here, because the two rules are separate. Check the planned route against the official transit network before dispatch, and keep the CMR note or transport order showing the Hungarian loading or unloading point in the cab. This is our operating advice, not a requirement quoted from the decree. Pair the route check with the delivery schedule too, since Hungary also applies truck driving bans; the Hungary truck driving ban times guide lists them.

How much does a 5-axle 40 t truck pay per 100 km?

A 5-axle 40 t truck pays 17,094 HUF per 100 km on a Hungarian motorway in infrastructure charge (170.94 HUF/km multiplied by 100 km, gross). The result is a method, not a route price: multiply it by the tolled kilometres on your actual route.

Three comparisons show where the money moves:

  • A J4 declaration for the same truck would give 16,326 HUF per 100 km, which is 768 HUF less. Declaring the wrong category understates the toll, so check the axle setting before each trip.
  • A J4 truck on a main road pays 10,205 HUF per 100 km, which is 6,121 HUF less than on a motorway. Whether that saving is worth the time depends on the route, and on the transit-network rule above if the run is pure transit.
  • The J5 main-road figure is not confirmed, so there is no honest per-100-km number for it here.

To build a lane cost, follow four steps:

  1. Split the planned route into motorway kilometres and main-road kilometres with a truck route planner.
  2. Multiply each part by the matching HUF/km rate for your category.
  3. Add the external-cost charge for the truck's emission class from utdijkalkulacio.hu.
  4. Convert to your invoicing currency at the exchange rate of the day, and add the tolls of the other countries on the lane.

On runs that enter from Romania, the Romanian leg has its own distance-based charge; TollRo cost per km shows how to cost that part.

Which should you use: OBU, route ticket or EETS?

An OBU linked to a HU-GO account suits regular runs, a route ticket suits occasional trips, and EETS suits carriers that already hold a provider contract. Autopay's driver guide confirms that the OBU is tied to a HU-GO account and that Hungary offers toll declaration and EETS providers as payment options. It names no providers, so confirm Hungarian coverage with yours. For background on the service, read the EETS guide for trucks .

The route ticket (útvonaljegy, officially the occasional route ticket) must be paid before the trip. It gives a one-time right to use the planned route in one direction, and the country sign of the truck plate must be entered ( HU-GO ). According to Autopay's driver guide, a route ticket has been valid for 120 minutes from purchase since 2025-02-01, so buy it close to departure and confirm the current period on hu-go.hu.

Other points that affect day-to-day practice:

  • The tolled network was extended on 2026-07-01 ( HU-GO ). Check every road on your route against the calculator instead of relying on an older map.
  • Decree 375/2025 Korm. raised the first-time-band fines for J2 to J5 from 2026-01-01. We could not confirm the HUF amounts, so read them from HU-GO.
  • Since 2025-12-29, NTPS notifies a requesting carrier within 3 hours if unauthorised road use is suspected, and the alert is free ( HU-GO ). Register for it, since it gives you a chance to correct an error during the run.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the toll for trucks in Hungary?

In 2026 the motorway infrastructure charge is 65.89 HUF/km for J2, 105.32 for J3, 163.26 for J4 and 170.94 for J5, all gross. Main-road values are lower, for example 102.05 HUF/km for J4. The external-cost charge comes on top and depends on emission class, so use utdijkalkulacio.hu for a full price.

What is HU-GO?

HU-GO is the Hungarian distance-based electronic toll system for heavy vehicles, operated by NTPS. It charges per kilometre on tolled motorways and main roads by vehicle category and emission class. The network was extended on 2026-07-01, so verify that every road on your route is covered.

Do trucks need an OBU in Hungary?

Not for every trip. An OBU linked to a HU-GO account suits regular runs, while a route ticket bought before departure covers one planned route in one direction. Toll declaration and EETS providers are also listed as options by Autopay.

How long is a HU-GO route ticket valid?

Since 2025-02-01 a route ticket has been valid for 120 minutes from purchase, according to Autopay's driver guide published on 2025-08-27. Confirm the current validity period on hu-go.hu before you rely on a figure from 2025.

What is the fine for not paying the toll in Hungary?

Toll fines are set in bands by decree, and decree 375/2025 Korm. raised the first-time-band fines for J2 to J5 from 2026-01-01. We could not confirm the HUF amounts, so check HU-GO before quoting a figure. The 400,000 HUF fine is a separate traffic-code penalty for leaving the transit network.

Can trucks drive on main roads in Hungary?

Yes, tolled main roads belong to the HU-GO network at lower per-km rates than motorways. The limit is the transit rule: since 2026-04-11, heavy trucks with no Hungarian destination risk a 400,000 HUF fine if they leave the designated transit network. A truck delivering to or loading in Hungary may leave it.

Is the Hungary toll the same for Euro VI trucks?

The infrastructure charge in the table is set by axle category and road type. The external-cost charge changes with emission class, from EURO 0 to EURO 6, and zero-emission vehicles are at 0.00 ( HU-GO ). We have not verified the Euro VI HUF/km values, so take them from the official calculator.
