A foreign-registered truck can pay Portuguese tolls with an interoperable toll device from its own issuer, a Via Verde Go Toll plan billed by plate photo (any class), or Easytoll if Infraestruturas de Portugal confirms truck use. Unpaid electronic-only passages must be settled within 15 working days.
How do you pay at a manual toll lane and at an electronic-only gantry?
Portugal runs two systems: traditional toll plazas with barriers and electronic-only gantries with no booth ( Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) , read 2026-10-31).
At a plaza, pay in cash or by bank card at the barrier, with no administrative cost. On an electronic-only gantry nothing stops you, so the payment method must exist before you enter or be settled afterward. IP keeps a map of the electronic-only stretches, so check it when you plan the route. For other countries on your route, see our EU road tolls for trucks country guide .
Which option suits a foreign truck: Easytoll, Via Verde Go Toll or your own device?
First, check the device you already carry. An interoperable toll device issued abroad works across the whole network and adds no administrative fee to the toll, but your issuer must have Portugal activated. IP lists accepted foreign issuers, including DKV, AS24, EuroWag and Telepass, and our European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) guide for HGVs explains how these services work.
Second, Via Verde Go Toll needs no on-board unit: Via Verde photographs the plate and bills the account, and sign-up is online for foreign plates only. The Via Verde conditions state that Go Toll is available to foreign-registered vehicles of any class, so a truck qualifies. Classes follow axle count and first-axle height, not weight: class 3 has three axles, class 4 more than three ( IMT , 2025). The Go Toll & Beyond plan with a device is limited to classes 1, 2 and 5, and the older Visitors device subscription is closed to new members according to the Via Verde price list of 2026-04-10.
Third, Easytoll links a Visa, Mastercard or Maestro card to the plate for 30 days after registration. It costs 1 EUR to subscribe plus 0.32 EUR per trip and is not valid on the 25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama bridges. The official page lists no class limit but never mentions heavy vehicles, so confirm truck use with IP before relying on it.
What if you drove through an electronic toll without paying?
Pay within 15 working days after the passage. Post-payment adds 0.32 EUR per trip, capped at 2.56 EUR per payment, on top of the toll, and applies only to exclusively electronic motorways ( IP ). You can pay at CTT post offices or CTT Points, Payshop agents or the Multibanco network. Amounts can take up to 48 business hours to become payable, so do not wait for day 15. The official page states no penalty amount, so we do not quote one.
Frequently asked questions
Can a foreign truck use Easytoll in Portugal?
Not confirmed. The official page lists no class limit but never mentions heavy vehicles, so ask IP before you rely on it for a class 3 or 4 truck.
Does Via Verde Go Toll work for a class 3 or 4 truck?
Yes, according to the Via Verde terms, which open Go Toll to foreign-registered vehicles of any class. The device plan, Go Toll & Beyond, is limited to classes 1, 2 and 5.
How long do I have to pay an electronic toll I missed?
Pay within 15 working days after the passage. The post-payment fee is 0.32 EUR per trip, up to 2.56 EUR per payment. Payment is possible at CTT, Payshop or Multibanco.
Are trucks toll-free on any Portuguese motorway in 2026?
Yes, on three sections. Under Lei 6/2026 of 2026-02-24, tolls are suspended for classes 3 and 4 on the A41 (CREP), the A19 (São Jorge to Leiria Sul) and the A8 (Leiria Sul to Pousos), retroactive to 2026-01-01 ( APCMC ). Tolls already paid are refundable on request, and the law sets no fixed end date, so check current status.
