The official way to check a Romania border truck queue is the Romanian Border Police Trafic online page for the Hungary and Bulgaria crossings, and the eCherha electronic queue plus nakordoni.eu for the Ukraine and Moldova crossings. Routine checks at Romania's internal land borders ended on 2025-01-01, yet about 7,300 trucks per day still crossed those borders in 2024 ( Border Police, 2024-12-30 ), and renovation of the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge is scheduled to run until 2026-12-03 ( trans.info, 2026-10-21 ). This guide shows which tool covers which crossing, why queues persist after Schengen, and how to build a queue check into dispatch.

How do you check a Romania border truck queue right now?

Use the tool that matches the border. The Border Police publish one page for the crossings with Hungary and Bulgaria, while the Ukraine crossings add a second layer: Ukraine's own queue system and independent boards that read it.

Hungary and Bulgaria: Border Police Trafic online

Trafic online is the official starting point. The page shows wait times in three bands: 0-29 minutes, 30-59 minutes, and over 59 minutes. You can filter by cars or trucks, by entry or exit, and switch between a map and a list. According to the page, the data comes from Romanian and Moldovan sources and from Waze, and the values are indicative: they do not rule out detailed checks.

Set the truck filter before you read anything, because car and truck bands are shown separately. The page shows no timestamps, so treat a band as a rough guide and look again before a driver commits to a route. A green reading at planning time says little about what the lane looks like six hours later.

Ukraine and Moldova: eCherha and nakordoni.eu

eCherha is Ukraine's electronic queue system for exits from Ukraine. It is free, runs as a public service, and the Ukrainian government launched it at 16 checkpoints on the borders with Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova, including Siret-Porubne, Isaccea-Orlivka and Halmeu-Diakovo ( Ukraine Cabinet, 2023-05-10 ). The queue position lives in the system, so the driver or the dispatcher needs the registration, not just a view of the road.

nakordoni.eu is an independent board that shows a live cargo reading per crossing, for example for Siret-Porubne . Read each figure as one moment in time. Check the timestamp on the page, and compare two readings a few hours apart before you draw a conclusion. We do not quote a typical wait for any Ukraine crossing, because a single snapshot is not a typical wait.

Romanian truck crossings and how to check each

The table below pairs each crossing with the tool that covers it. Where we could not verify a current detail, the notes column says so instead of guessing. Confirm which crossing points Trafic online currently lists for your lane before you rely on it.

Why do trucks still queue at Nadlac and Giurgiu after Schengen?

Ending routine checks removed the checkpoint, but it did not remove the traffic, the road layout or the random checks. Since 2025-01-01 the Border Police no longer run checks at the internal land crossings with Hungary and Bulgaria. Random, risk-based checks remain within 30 km inside the border, carried out by mixed patrols with mobile devices running the eDAC application ( Border Police, 2024-12-30 ).

The volume explains why even light enforcement shows up in the queue. In 2024, about 7,300 trucks per day crossed Romania's internal borders, and Nadlac II and Giurgiu each handled roughly 2,400 to 2,500 or more. At that flow, a patrol stop, a breakdown or a lane restriction stacks up quickly behind it.

Other factors may add time, such as document or weight checks and processing on the Bulgarian side. We found no source that measures any of them after 2025, so we do not rank them. We also found no published queue statistics for Nadlac or Giurgiu since January 2025. That gap is the practical argument for live tools: any average you read in older press coverage describes the era of routine checks.

Weekend and holiday driving bans can also bunch trucks at the border. Our guides to Romania truck driving ban times and Hungary truck driving ban times show when those windows fall.

What is the status of the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge works?

The Giurgiu-Ruse bridge runs on a single lane with traffic alternating about every 20 minutes, and renovation is scheduled to finish on 2026-12-03. The trans.info report of 2026-10-21 describes works on a section of roughly 320 m at the expansion joints on the Bulgarian side, with right-lane and left-lane closures announced in blocks and a note that the schedule may change in bad weather.

The finish date has already moved. Bulgarian rehabilitation work began in summer 2024, and in April 2026 the Romanian ambassador said the bridge was expected to reopen in both directions at the beginning of July 2026 ( Playtech, 2026-04-16 ). Works were still running in late October 2026. Treat 2026-12-03 as a schedule, not a promise, and keep a buffer in any plan that crosses here.

For a dispatcher, the alternating cycle matters as much as the border itself. A truck that just misses its turn waits for the opposite flow to clear before it can start moving. Check the day's lane-closure notice for the bridge before you quote a transit time, and compare the Giurgiu band with the other Bulgarian crossings in the table above.

What about the bridge toll?

One report says Romania stopped charging the bridge toll on 2026-10-01 at Giurgiu-Ruse, Fetesti and Giurgeni-Vadu Oii, replacing it with TollRo distance charging for heavy vehicles, while the Bulgarian toll in the Ruse-to-Giurgiu direction remains (the same trans.info report). We found only that one source, so treat it as unconfirmed. Check the current toll with the Romanian road authority (CNAIR) before you price a load, and see our TollRo cost per km guide for the distance-based charge.

Trucks that continue through Bulgaria toward Turkey meet another queue point at the end of the corridor, covered in our Kapikule border queue guide .

How does eCherha affect trucks leaving Ukraine for Romania?

eCherha decides the order in which freight trucks reach the Ukrainian side of crossings such as Siret-Porubne, so a truck without a valid registration cannot join the queue. The rule that most often trips up mixed fleets is recent. Since May 2026, eCherha blocks a queue entry if the truck's registration country differs from the carrier's country ( nakordoni.eu, 2026-05-05 ). The update names Porubne among the affected checkpoints.

If you run leased or subcontracted tractors, check the registration country against the carrier entered in the system before the truck is dispatched. Finding out at the border means the truck does not enter the queue at all.

Timing also matters at Siret-Porubne. nakordoni.eu reports that border guard shift changes at 08:00 and 20:00 Kyiv time add 20 to 60 minutes of delay, and that the crossing is open around the clock. This is the site's own guidance, not an official statistic, so use it to avoid arriving into a shift change rather than to build a schedule.

The same queue mechanism applies on the Polish border, which we cover in our Ukraine-Poland border truck queue check .

Does the Entry/Exit System change border planning for drivers?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) applies at Romania's external Schengen borders, such as those with Ukraine and Moldova, but we cannot say how much time it adds per truck. The European Commission states that EES started progressively on 2025-10-12 and has been fully operational since 2026-04-10. It registers non-EU short-stay travellers, records fingerprints and a facial image, and replaces passport stamping ( European Commission ).

The Commission page we read does not cover driver-specific treatment, such as exemptions, residence permit holders or the 90/180-day rule. We found no measured effect on truck handling times either. For non-EU drivers on your roster, ask your compliance contact or the border authority how EES applies to them before a first crossing.

Dispatcher checklist for Romanian border queues

Run these steps for every load that touches a Romanian land border.

  1. Identify the border. For Hungary and Bulgaria use Trafic online; for Ukraine use eCherha plus nakordoni.eu; for Moldova start with nakordoni.eu and confirm truck access.
  2. Set the truck filter and the correct direction on Trafic online, and note the band: 0-29, 30-59 or over 59 minutes.
  3. Check at dispatch and check again before the driver commits to the final approach, because the page shows no timestamps.
  4. For Giurgiu-Ruse, read the day's lane-closure notice and compare the band with Vama Veche, Negru Voda and Calafat. Add the detour distance before you decide.
  5. For Ukraine exits, confirm the eCherha registration and that the truck's registration country matches the carrier's.
  6. Avoid planning arrival at Siret-Porubne around 08:00 and 20:00 Kyiv time.
  7. Check the driving-ban calendar for Romania and the neighbouring country against the planned arrival window.
  8. Confirm the current bridge toll before pricing Giurgiu-Ruse loads.
  9. Log the actual waits your trucks see at each crossing. No published post-2025 average exists for Nadlac or Giurgiu, so your own records become the benchmark.
  10. Quote the customer with a buffer, and state it. A transit time with no queue allowance will be missed the first time a lane closes.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the wait at the Romanian border for trucks?

There is no fixed answer. Trafic online reports bands of 0-29, 30-59 and over 59 minutes for each crossing, and the values are indicative. Ukraine crossings vary with eCherha queue position and shift changes, so read a live board rather than an average.

Are there still border checks between Romania and Hungary?

Routine checks at the Romanian land crossings with Hungary ended on 2025-01-01. Random, risk-based checks remain within 30 km inside the border, so a truck can still be stopped near Nadlac II or Bors.

Is the Giurgiu-Ruse bridge open for trucks?

As of the trans.info report of 2026-10-21, traffic crosses on a single lane with alternation about every 20 minutes. We did not find a published weight or lane rule specific to trucks, so confirm limits with the road authority or your carrier, and read the daily closure notice.

How do I register for the eCherha queue?

eCherha is a free Ukrainian service that works through the web and an app. The truck must be registered, and since May 2026 the vehicle registration country must match the carrier's country or the entry is blocked. Follow the current instructions on the official eCherha service.

Which border crossing is best for trucks to Bulgaria?

The best crossing is the one with the lowest live band for your direction, adjusted for detour distance. Giurgiu-Ruse, Vama Veche, Negru Voda and Calafat are all named by the Border Police as Bulgarian crossings. Compare them in Trafic online at dispatch, and remember that Giurgiu-Ruse is on a single lane until the works end.

A queue allowance only helps if it reaches the customer before the truck leaves. If your lane runs through Nadlac, Giurgiu-Ruse or the Ukraine crossings, request a freight quote with the border, the loading window and the cargo type, and we will price the lane with queue time in mind.
