On 1 January 2027, the Slovak truck toll moves from SkyToll to a new electronic system owned and run by the national motorway company NDS. Rates and charged roads stay the same, but SkyToll users must register again and fit a new on-board unit, from CzechToll or an EETS provider.
What changes in the Slovak truck toll on 1 January 2027?
SkyToll's current service ends on 2026-12-31, and the new system starts regular operation on 2027-01-01, according to NDS, the Slovak national motorway company . NDS takes over administration, operation and control. Customer service passes to EETS providers and to CzechToll, s.r.o., which runs the new prepaid mode.
Payers choose between two modes. Mode A is the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS), offered by Telepass, Toll4Europe and W.A.G. Payment Solutions, with one on-board unit for several EU countries and one invoice. Mode B is prepaid toll through CzechToll, with registration opening on 2026-12-01. Postpaid payers in the old system move to one of the two modes after the transition. For the rules in other countries, see our EU road tolls guide for trucks .
Do I need a new on-board unit for the Slovak toll in 2027?
If you use a SkyToll unit today, plan on replacing it. NDS states that units are delivered to customers in both modes, and prepaid customers pay a refundable deposit, an amount the NDS information site does not publish. Every payer must also end the SkyToll registration and contract and settle all liabilities by 2026-12-31. That site gives no end-of-validity date for existing SkyToll units, so do not rely on a date quoted elsewhere.
Carriers already on EETS do not need to register again. If you switch to EETS, get the provider's unit first, then return the SkyToll unit at a SkyToll sales point or by post, and deactivate it once the new one works, because running two units for the same country can create duplicate transactions . Our EETS guide for HGV operators explains how one unit works across borders.
How much is the Slovak truck toll per km?
The toll is charged per kilometre and depends on weight, axles, EURO class, CO2 class and road type. For motorways, the annex to Government Regulation 418/2024 , in force since 2025-07-01, sets these rates for EURO VI in CO2 class 1, excluding VAT: 0.1039 EUR/km for 3.5 to 12 tonnes, 0.1919 EUR/km for two axles above 12 tonnes and 0.2677 EUR/km for five or more axles.
NDS says the rates and scope of charging are the same under the new system, whichever mode you use. Check your route against the Slovak truck driving ban hours before you fix a schedule.
Frequently asked questions
Who has to pay the Slovak truck toll?
The electronic toll applies to trucks over 3.5 tonnes and to buses, according to the Slovak government portal. Tolled vehicles need an on-board unit, and charging is automatic without stopping. Lighter vehicles use the e-vignette instead.
Can I use an EETS unit in Slovakia from 2027?
Yes. Paying through EETS is optional, and NDS lists Telepass, Toll4Europe and W.A.G. Payment Solutions as providers. Discounts based on kilometres driven carry over if you change provider.
When can I register for the new Slovak toll system?
EETS registration is open now. Registration for CzechToll prepaid mode opens on 2026-12-01. The SkyToll registration and contract must be ended by 2026-12-31, so register early enough to receive the unit before 2027-01-01.
Will Slovak toll rates change in 2027?
NDS states that toll rates and the scope of charging stay the same in the new system, whether you pay through the national provider or an EETS provider. The rate table in force since 2025-07-01 is therefore the best current reference. Check NDS notices before you budget for later in 2027.
