The Switzerland LSVA truck toll (Leistungsabhängige Schwerverkehrsabgabe, the Swiss heavy vehicle fee) is not scheduled to rise on 2027-01-01, and a Euro VI truck keeps paying 2.39 rappen (Rp) per tonne-kilometre (tkm), the rate in force since the 5% inflation adjustment of 2025-01-01 ( ASTAG, 2024-06-11 ). The motion for a higher tariff from that date, number 25.3956, was withdrawn without a vote in the Council of States in June 2026 and counts as rejected ( parlament.ch, 2026-06-03 ). Parliament then adopted the reform of the Heavy Vehicle Charge Act in the final vote on 2026-10-02, which brings electric trucks into the fee from 2031 ( electrive, 2026-10-06 ).
This guide gives the rate for each category, the formula, a worked 300 km example in CHF and EUR, the timetables for Euro VI and electric trucks, and the three ways a foreign-registered truck pays.
What are the Switzerland LSVA truck toll rates per tonne-kilometre today?
The LSVA has three rate categories, and Euro VI trucks sit in the cheapest one at 2.39 Rp per tkm. The table shows the rates in force since the 5% inflation adjustment on 2025-01-01.
| Category | Rate (Rp per tkm) | Who pays it | Source basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3.26 | Highest rate, older emission classes | Derived from the 5% adjustment, not directly confirmed |
| 2 | 2.82 | Intermediate category, the planned home of Euro VI (date not set) | watson, 2025-05-28 |
| 3 | 2.39 | Euro VI trucks today | ASTAG, 2024-06-11 |
ASTAG, the Swiss road haulage association, reported that the Euro VI rate rises from 2.28 Rp to 2.39 Rp with the 2025 adjustment. The 2.82 Rp figure for category 2 comes from watson's coverage of the Federal Council's reform proposal.
The category 1 figure of 3.26 Rp is our calculation. Applying the 5% adjustment to the previous category 1 rate of 3.10 Rp gives 3.255, which rounds to 3.26 Rp. We could not open a primary tariff table, so check this rate against your BAZG invoice before you put it in a quote.

How is the LSVA calculated for a 40 t truck?
The charge equals the kilometres driven in Swiss customs territory, multiplied by the applicable weight in tonnes, multiplied by the rate for the vehicle's category. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) names the same inputs: distance driven, the applicable weight from the registration document, and the emission class ( BAZG: LSVA calculation ). Rates are quoted in Rp, so divide the result by 100 to get francs.
For a semi-trailer, the applicable weight is the tractor's tare weight plus the trailer's maximum gross weight. BAZG states a cap of 40 t on the applicable weight. We have not verified how that cap treats 44 t combined-transport rigs, so check the ordinance before you price those.
A quick check: a 40 t Euro VI combination that drives 100 km in Switzerland pays 100 x 40 x 2.39 = 9,560 Rp, which is 95.60 CHF.
What does a 300 km Swiss transit cost in CHF and EUR?
A 40 t Euro VI truck driving 300 km in Switzerland pays 286.80 CHF, about 311 EUR, at today's category 3 rate. The example uses 300 km as the reference length for a Basel-Chiasso transit, not a measured route, and it assumes the full distance is driven in Swiss territory at 40 t with no discounts.
286.80 CHF
About 311 EUR at today's category 3 rate of 2.39 Rp per tkm.
| Case | Rate (Rp per tkm) | Calculation | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Euro VI today (category 3) | 2.39 | 300 km x 40 t x 2.39 Rp = 28,680 Rp | 286.80 CHF, about 311 EUR |
| Scenario: Euro VI moved to category 2 (no date set) | 2.82 | 300 km x 40 t x 2.82 Rp = 33,840 Rp | 338.40 CHF, about 367 EUR |
Both results are our own calculations, not published tariffs. The EUR figures use the ECB reference rate of 0.9227 EUR/CHF on 2026-10-23 ( ECB ), so recompute them at the rate on the day you quote.
The scenario row adds 51.60 CHF per trip, about 56 EUR, which is an increase of about 18%. The category 2 row is a planning case only, because the date of any Euro VI move is not fixed (see the Euro VI section below). To set the Swiss figure against a neighbour, compare the German truck toll rate per km .
Will the LSVA go up on 2027-01-01?
No LSVA increase is scheduled for 2027-01-01. Motion 25.3956 asked for higher rates from that date; the National Council had adopted it narrowly in March 2026, and in June 2026 the minority in the Council of States withdrew its proposal without a vote, so the motion is considered rejected ( parlament.ch, 2026-06-03 ).
The system has no automatic indexation. The Federal Council can raise rates, but each increase needs a separate decision, and the last one was the 5% adjustment of 2025-01-01. After the final vote of 2026-10-02, a 100-day optional referendum period follows, which needs 50,000 signatures. According to trans.info , no party had announced a referendum in early October 2026, and ASTAG considers one unlikely. The same report says ASTAG expects Euro VI trucks to move to category 2 in 2029, with the Federal Council deciding.
The Federal Council still has to set the specific tariffs in an ordinance ( electrive ). With a referendum window and an ordinance still ahead, the reform's new categories and the e-truck charge cannot realistically apply from 2027-01-01. That is our reading of the timetable, not an official statement.
When do Euro VI trucks move to a more expensive category?
No date is fixed. The reform moves Euro VI to the second-cheapest category, and the Federal Council decides the timing and the tariffs in the ordinance ( electrive ). ASTAG's expectation of 2029, noted above, is an association forecast and not a legal date.
If the move happens at the 2.82 Rp rate, the 300 km example above rises from 286.80 CHF to 338.40 CHF. Tariffs and discounts for Euro 7 trucks are not yet defined, according to the same electrive report.
For contracts that run past 2028, price the Swiss leg at 2.39 Rp and show the 2.82 Rp case as a sensitivity. That keeps the quote honest about what is known and what is not.
When do electric trucks start paying the LSVA?
Electric trucks start paying the LSVA in 2031, and they are exempt until the end of 2030. Earlier coverage and the federal bill proposed 2029; Parliament moved the start to 2031. A discount then shrinks over five years: 70% in 2031, 50% in 2032, 30% in 2033, 20% in 2034 and 10% in 2035, with no discount from 2036 ( electrive, 2026-10-06 ).
In June 2026 the Council of States settled on a discount of at least 70% in 2031 and 50% in 2032, and it rejected its committee's alternative discount scheme by 22 votes to 21 ( parlament.ch, 2026-06-03 ). The table applies the schedule to the e-truck base rate of 2.39 Rp that watson reported before the rebate ( watson, 2025-05-28 ).
| Year | Discount | Illustrative rate (Rp per tkm) | 300 km, 40 t trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2031 | 70% | 0.717 | 86.04 CHF |
| 2032 | 50% | 1.195 | 143.40 CHF |
| 2033 | 30% | 1.673 | 200.76 CHF |
| 2034 | 20% | 1.912 | 229.44 CHF |
| 2035 | 10% | 2.151 | 258.12 CHF |
| 2036 onward | none | 2.390 | 286.80 CHF |
This table is an illustration, not a tariff: the Federal Council still sets the final rates in the ordinance, so the base rate may differ. Electric trucks must carry recording equipment even while they are exempt ( BAZG: the LSVA at a glance ). Watson reported in May 2025 that about 1,000 or more exempt electric trucks were on Swiss roads, up from 234 in 2022.
How do foreign trucks pay the Switzerland LSVA truck toll?
Foreign-registered trucks pay the same fee as Swiss ones, through one of three routes: NETS, EETS or NMTS. The fee applies to goods vehicles above 3.5 t driven in Swiss customs territory, whatever the registration country ( BAZG: the LSVA at a glance ).
- NETS covers Switzerland only and needs ePortal registration for foreign-registered vehicles.
- EETS (the European Electronic Toll Service) covers several European toll systems, and the provider of a foreign-registered vehicle invoices the LSVA. Read how EETS providers invoice the LSVA before choosing a device.
- NMTS is the manual route for foreign vehicles without a NETS or EETS unit that drive in Switzerland only occasionally, according to the BAZG overview page.
BAZG enforces the fee with stationary and mobile checks and compares recorded traffic against reported mileage ( BAZG ). Regular Swiss transits are cheaper to administer through NETS or EETS than through repeated manual declarations.
What should carriers do before the new rules arrive?
Carriers should budget the Swiss leg on today's rate and model the changes that are known to be coming. Six steps cover it.
- Budget Swiss legs for Euro VI at 2.39 Rp per tkm through 2027, because no increase is scheduled.
- Add a 2.82 Rp sensitivity to contracts that run into 2029 or later, and state the 18% effect on a 300 km trip.
- Show the Swiss toll as its own line in quotes, with distance, weight and category visible, so a tariff change passes through without renegotiation.
- Confirm each tractor's payment route (NETS, EETS or NMTS) before it reaches the border, and keep the registration data current.
- Run total cost of ownership for any electric tractor with the 2031 to 2035 step-up included.
- Track two dates: the end of the referendum period and the Federal Council's ordinance with the tariffs and the Euro VI timing.
Toll is only part of the cost of a Swiss transit leg. Plan the schedule around the Swiss night and Sunday driving bans and check the Swiss truck speed limits before you fix an ETA.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the LSVA for a truck in Switzerland?
A Euro VI truck pays 2.39 Rp per tkm, the category 3 rate. The other rates are 2.82 Rp for category 2 and a derived 3.26 Rp for category 1. A 40 t Euro VI truck driving 300 km pays 286.80 CHF, about 311 EUR.
How is the Swiss heavy vehicle fee calculated?
The fee is the kilometres driven in Swiss customs territory, multiplied by the applicable weight from the registration document, multiplied by the rate for the emission class. BAZG states a cap of 40 t on the applicable weight. The rate is quoted in Rp, so divide by 100 for francs.
Do electric trucks pay the LSVA?
Not yet. Electric trucks are exempt until the end of 2030 and start paying in 2031 with a discount of 70% in 2031, falling to 10% in 2035. Full rates apply from 2036, and the Federal Council still sets the tariffs.
Do foreign trucks have to pay the LSVA?
Yes. Goods vehicles above 3.5 t pay the LSVA in Switzerland whether they are Swiss or foreign-registered. Foreign trucks pay through NETS, EETS or the manual NMTS declaration.
Is the LSVA going up in 2027?
No increase is scheduled for 2027-01-01. Motion 25.3956 was withdrawn without a vote in June 2026, and the system has no automatic indexation. The reform adopted on 2026-10-02 still needs an ordinance and cannot realistically apply that day.
Does the LSVA apply to vans under 3.5 t?
No. BAZG defines the scope as vehicles above 3.5 t that carry goods, so a van at or below that weight is outside the LSVA.
