Groupage is a European road freight service where a carrier consolidates pallets from several shippers into one trailer. Each shipper pays only for the space their cargo occupies. Goods travel via a consolidation hub and are split at the destination - ideal for loads too big for a parcel courier but too small for a full truck.

How does groupage transport work step by step?

A groupage shipment moves through three stages. The carrier first collects your pallets alongside cargo from other shippers in the same region. All freight is driven to a consolidation depot - sometimes called a cross-dock hub - where it is sorted by destination region. The consolidated load then travels in a single trailer to a partner depot near the delivery point, and a local carrier makes individual deliveries to each shipper's customer.

This hub-and-spoke structure is why groupage adds one to two transit days compared to a direct full truck load . Pricing is calculated per pallet or per loading metre (LDM) , so you pay a fair share of trailer space rather than an empty-truck penalty. According to Eurostat road freight statistics , short-haul consolidated loads under five tonnes account for roughly 28% of EU road freight consignments by count.

When is groupage cheaper than booking a full truck?

Groupage is cost-effective for shipments of one to approximately five euro pallets. Below that threshold, a parcel network is usually faster and cheaper. Above eight to ten pallets, the per-LDM rate often approaches the price of a dedicated trailer, at which point a full truck load offers better value, faster transit, and less handling risk.

The IRU estimates that tens of thousands of groupage loads cross EU borders daily, driven by B2B e-commerce and just-in-time supply chains. SMEs shipping to multiple EU markets in small quantities benefit most: they access pan-European carrier networks without committing to a full trailer. EU road transport policy, set out by the European Commission , also encourages load consolidation to reduce empty running and cut emissions per tonne-kilometre. EC market monitoring data show EU HGV load factors averaging 65 to 70%, highlighting the structural underloading that makes groupage economically essential.

What are the main disadvantages of groupage shipping?

Groupage involves more cargo handling than a direct load, which raises the risk of minor damage or loss. Your pallets change hands at least twice - at the origin depot and at the destination depot - so packaging must be robust and labelling must be precise. Transit times are also less predictable than FTL, because a delay at one shipper's collection point can affect the grouped departure.

Liability under the CMR Convention applies per kilogram of gross weight, so high-value low-weight cargo may need supplementary insurance. Certain product categories - bulk liquids, some hazardous goods, and temperature-sensitive cargo - are not always available via standard groupage networks. The table below summarises the key differences at a glance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between groupage and LTL freight?

Groupage and LTL (less-than-truckload) describe the same concept with different regional labels. LTL is the standard term in North American road freight. In Europe, groupage is dominant and reflects the hub-consolidation model used by European carriers. The mechanics - multiple shippers sharing one trailer, paying per unit of space - are essentially identical.

How long does groupage delivery take across Europe?

Transit times vary by route, but a typical groupage shipment between neighbouring EU member states takes two to four working days. Cross-border shipments spanning two or more countries commonly take three to six working days. The extra time versus FTL reflects the mandatory hub stop, which adds one to two days to the direct driving time.

What size shipment suits groupage transport?

Groupage is most efficient for shipments between one and five euro pallets, or up to around 4 LDM of trailer space. Below one pallet, a parcel courier is usually cheaper. Above five to six pallets, it is worth obtaining a full truck quote alongside groupage, as the price difference narrows and transit time tips toward a dedicated truck.

Is groupage available for hazardous or temperature-controlled goods?

Some operators offer ADR-compliant groupage for certain hazardous goods UN classes, but availability varies by carrier and route. Temperature-controlled groupage exists but is less common and more expensive than ambient groupage because refrigerated trailers are harder to consolidate efficiently. Always confirm ADR certification and cold-chain capability before booking.
