Yes. Diesel in Austria averages EUR 2.15 per litre against EUR 2.28 in Germany, about 13 cents cheaper, or about EUR 78 on a 600 litre fill ( European Commission Weekly Oil Bulletin , updated 2026-11-05). These are national weekly averages, so individual pump prices differ.

What is the diesel price in Austria compared with its neighbours?

The bulletin lists an average price including taxes for each member state and is updated every Thursday. The Austrian figure is a national weekly average, not the price at one station. The Germany fuel page shows the matching German edition. Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia sit at EUR 1.98 each; they are not in the table.

Austria sits 5 cents above the EU average and 21 cents above Slovenia. The 13 cent gap to Germany is our own arithmetic (2.28 minus 2.15), and the EUR 78 figure is 0.13 multiplied by 600 litres. For the German side of this comparison, see our guide to the German diesel price for truck drivers .

Does tax explain why diesel is cheaper in Austria than in Germany?

No, the excise rate does not explain the gap. In November 2026 both countries charge the same EUR 0.330 per litre. Austria cut its base rate of EUR 397 per 1000 litres to EUR 330 for November 2026 under BGBl. II Nr. 316/2026 , and the October 2026 rate was also EUR 330. Germany lowered its energy tax from the normal EUR 0.4704 to EUR 0.330 per litre from 2026-10-01 to 2026-12-31, according to the German customs administration (zoll.de).

Both cuts are temporary, so the gap can change when they end. Austria also applies a fixed CO2 price of EUR 55 per tonne from 2025 to 2027, according to the Austrian finance ministry (BMF). We did not find an official cents per litre figure for it, so we do not quote one.

We found no excise refund for truck diesel in Austria. Tolls are another Austrian cost line for hauliers, covered in our post on Austria GO-Maut truck toll rates per km .

How can I find the cheapest diesel station in Austria?

Use the E-Control Spritpreisrechner. For a location it shows the ten nearest stations with the prices of the cheapest five, according to the Austrian business service portal (USP). Stations report their prices to a database at E-Control, so the figures come from the stations themselves.

Timing matters as well. Austrian stations may raise prices only once a day, at 12:00, while cuts are allowed at any time. The rule was extended for three years from 2026-01-01, according to the BMWET press release of 2025-12-30 . Filling before noon can therefore avoid a price rise that day.
