The best GPS for truck drivers in Europe is a navigator that routes by your own truck profile, keeps working offline and costs an amount you can justify, which in practice means a truck-specific app or a dedicated device rather than Google Maps. Wrong-road risk is real: Network Rail recorded 1,666 bridge strikes in Great Britain between 2024-04-01 and 2025-03-31 , about one every five hours, although the page does not blame satnav. This guide compares Sygic Truck, TomTom, Eurowag Navigation, Truckfly, the Garmin dezl LGV820 and Google Maps. Prices and features were checked on 2026-11-05.
What should the best GPS for truck drivers do that Google Maps cannot?
A truck navigator must plan the route around the vehicle profile. That means height, weight, length, width, axle count and hazardous goods class go into the profile, and the route avoids low bridges, weight limits and restricted tunnels for that profile.
Beyond routing, five features separate a useful tool from a car app with a truck icon:
- Offline maps stored on the device, so a lost signal in a mountain tunnel does not end guidance.
- Truck parking, rest areas and fuel stops as searchable points of interest.
- Truck speed limit warnings, since HGV limits can differ from car limits.
- Several switchable profiles, for example a solo tractor and a full combination.
- Regular map updates, because road restrictions change.
The rules behind these profiles come from EU law on vehicle weights and dimensions, Directive 96/53/EC. A navigator is only as good as the numbers you type into the profile.
Which truck navigation apps and devices are worth comparing in Europe in 2027?
Six options cover most European drivers: four apps, one device family and one general-purpose map. The table below shows each one side by side. Prices vary by app-store region and by retailer, so each price states where it was checked, all on 2026-11-05. The entry "not stated" means the vendor page or store listing did not give the answer.
| Option | Type | Price checked 2026-11-05 (store or region) | Truck profile | Offline maps | Parking and fuel POIs | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sygic Truck | App (iOS, Android) | Europe Truck 74.99 EUR in-app, or 9.99 EUR monthly subscription (German App Store) | Type, speed, length, height, weight, width, axles, trailers, hazmat, Euro class | Yes, 3D maps stored on device | Truck stops, parking, rest areas, weigh stations, fuel prices on route | No live parking occupancy or driving-ban calendar found; traffic is a paid add-on |
| TomTom GO Professional and GO Expert Plus | Devices | GO Professional 299, GO Expert Plus 6 inch 399, 7 inch Premium Pack 499 (TomTom Ireland page, no currency symbol shown) | Dimensions, weight, max speed, cargo type, several profiles | Yes, monthly map updates over Wi-Fi | 50,000+ large-vehicle POIs including fuel, parking and service | No live parking occupancy found; traffic terms not stated clearly on the page |
| TomTom GO Expert | App | US App Store: 19.99 USD monthly or 89.99 USD yearly; EU price not stated | Truck routing, hazmat avoidance | Yes | Truck fuel and parking POIs | No live parking occupancy found |
| Eurowag Navigation | App | Free account; Premium 79.99 EUR per year after a 14-day trial (Eurowag page) | Height, weight, length, axles, several profiles | Premium only | Fuel stations, truck parking, other stops | Some features need a Eurowag client; offline maps need Premium |
| Truckfly (Michelin) | App | Premium 6.99 EUR per month or 74.99 EUR per year, 14-day trial (Truckfly page) | Vehicle profile; bridge heights and restricted roads | Not stated | 135,000+ truck stops in the free tier | Full truck GPS needs Premium |
| Garmin dezl LGV820 | Device, 8 inch | 599.99 EUR at Saturn.de (RRP 699.99 EUR); 699.99 EUR at Coolblue.de | Truck routing on the device | Not stated | Not stated in the retailer listing | Hardware only; costs far more than an app |
| Google Maps | App (consumer) | Not stated | None documented | Not stated | Not stated | No documented truck or HGV routing mode |
One note on sources. Vendor-written "best apps" lists can rank the vendor's own product, as Eurowag's own blog does for this query. That is normal for company content, and it is the reason this comparison lists prices with a store and a date so you can check them yourself.
How do the options compare on price and offline maps?
The cheapest truck-grade options are apps from 74.99 EUR, and the costliest is a dedicated device at 599.99 EUR or more. Within that range the details matter more than the headline price.
Sygic Truck
Sygic sells its Europe package as an in-app item. The German App Store listing showed Europe Truck at 74.99 EUR and a truck monthly subscription at 9.99 EUR, with real-time traffic as a separate add-on at 11.99 EUR or 14.99 EUR. The listing does not say whether the 74.99 EUR item is a lifetime or a yearly licence, so confirm that before you pay. The store rating was 4.2 from 9,065 ratings in the German store.
TomTom devices and the GO Expert app
TomTom's current truck devices run from 299 (currency not shown) for the GO Professional to 499 (currency not shown) for the 7 inch GO Expert Plus Premium Pack on the TomTom truck GPS page . The page shows no currency symbol, and it describes traffic access in two different ways, so do not assume traffic is included. TomTom also has a phone app, called GO Expert. The only app price confirmed in this check was in the US store, so check your own region before comparing it with the others.
Eurowag Navigation
Eurowag Navigation costs 79.99 EUR per year after a 14-day trial, covers 52+ countries and territories, and keeps offline maps with truck attributes behind the Premium tier. The free version needs an account, and some features require you to be a Eurowag client. Dispatchers who already use Eurowag Office can send routes to the driver and chat in the same Eurowag system.
Truckfly
Truckfly puts parking and driver reviews in its free tier. The free tier lists more than 135,000 truck stops with ratings, a job board and news, while the full truck GPS, live traffic and community alerts sit in Premium at 6.99 EUR per month or 74.99 EUR per year, according to the Truckfly GPS Premium page . Offline maps are not stated on the vendor page, so test that yourself during the 14-day trial.
Garmin dezl LGV820
The dezl is a purpose-built 8 inch device that does not depend on your phone. Retail prices checked on 2026-11-05 were 599.99 EUR at Saturn.de and 699.99 EUR at Coolblue.de, and no official Garmin price was available. Garmin lists map updates through Garmin Express on a computer, and the updates are large. Garmin's "lifetime maps" wording means the shorter of the device's useful life or the time Garmin keeps receiving map data, as the Garmin dezl manual explains.
Can you use Google Maps in a truck?
You can open it, but Google documents no truck or HGV routing mode for the consumer Maps app, so it cannot protect you from a height, weight or length restriction.
Google does have a business product for heavy vehicles. Its Large Vehicle Routing, part of the Routes API and Navigation SDK, lists the contiguous 48 US states as generally available and Japan as experimental , with access limited to provisioned projects. Europe is not listed on that page. Do not rely on Google Maps for a route that your trailer has to physically fit.
How do you choose the best truck GPS: phone app or dedicated device?
Choose a phone app if you want low cost and flexibility, and a dedicated device if you want a screen that never doubles as your phone. Both can be the best truck GPS for the right driver. Use these four checks to decide.
Phone app or dedicated device
An app costs from 74.99 EUR in the stores checked here (Eurowag and Truckfly per year) and runs on a phone you already carry. A device such as the dezl costs 599.99 EUR or more once, has a larger screen and keeps guidance separate from calls and messages. If you drive a company truck with a mount and power already fitted, a device is easy to justify. If you change vehicles or rent trucks, an app travels with you.
Set the truck profile correctly
Enter the real height, weight, length, width and axle count, and add hazmat only if you carry it. Add a few centimetres of margin on height. Create a separate profile for each vehicle combination, and check the profile again whenever you change trailer. A perfect router with a wrong profile will still send you under the wrong bridge.
Keep offline maps updated
Download your countries over Wi-Fi before you leave, and repeat it before each long trip. Sygic updates its maps several times a year, TomTom devices update monthly over Wi-Fi, and Garmin updates are large enough that a good connection helps. Offline maps that are a year old will miss new restrictions.
Check bans and parking separately
No driving-ban calendar was found for Sygic Truck in this check. In June 2026, for example, the free Autobahn app added the BGL alternative-route map for the German summer holiday ban, which applied on Saturdays from 2026-07-04 to 2026-08-29, 07:00 to 20:00, to trucks over 7.5 t and combinations, as reported by eurotransport.de . That information lived in a separate app from the navigators compared here. Check the public holiday and driving-ban calendar by country before you plan a weekend leg. For parking, a free truck parking map shows locations and facilities where known, and Germany has a live occupancy map of motorway rest areas that updates from the federal feed, with values that may lag several minutes.
Where does the Logifie Driver Assistant fit next to a navigator?
The Logifie Driver Assistant is a companion to a navigator, not a replacement for one. It has no turn-by-turn guidance and no truck-profile routing, so you still need one of the tools above for the route itself. What it adds is information that the navigators above did not show in this check.
The Driver Assistant app is free, runs on iOS and Android, needs no account and shows no ads. It covers:
- A map of truck parkings and fuel stations.
- Public holidays and truck driving-ban days per country.
- Truck speed limits for 39 countries.
- A driver hours log with EC 561/2006 checks, which is not a tachograph and not an official record.
On fuel, the app shows weekly country-level diesel and petrol prices from the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin, refreshed on Thursdays. These are not live station prices, so use them to compare countries when planning, not to find the cheapest pump on a given street. The app has no occupancy forecast, and live occupancy exists only for German motorway areas through the web map mentioned above.
You pick a parking area or fuel stop in the app, and it hands the location to Sygic Truck, TomTom, Google Maps, Waze, HERE WeGo or Apple Maps, where your truck profile then plans the route.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Maps have a truck mode in Europe?
You can use it for general traffic and addresses, but Google documents no truck or HGV routing mode for the consumer app. Its Large Vehicle Routing product covers the contiguous 48 US states and, experimentally, Japan, not Europe, according to Google's developer page checked on 2026-11-05. Use a truck-specific navigator for the actual route.
Is there a free truck GPS app in Europe?
Partly. Eurowag Navigation lets you create an account and use it for free, but offline maps with truck attributes need Premium at 79.99 EUR per year. Truckfly has a free tier with more than 135,000 truck stops, but full truck GPS requires Premium at 6.99 EUR per month or 74.99 EUR per year.
Which truck GPS works offline?
Sygic Truck stores 3D maps on the device, the TomTom GO Expert app supports offline maps, and TomTom devices update maps monthly over Wi-Fi. Eurowag Navigation offers offline maps with truck attributes on Premium only. Truckfly's offline support is not stated on its vendor page, so test it during the 14-day trial.
Do truck GPS apps show driving bans?
Not reliably. No driving-ban calendar was found for Sygic Truck, and the German holiday ban route map from June 2026 appeared in the separate Autobahn app. Check bans in a dedicated calendar before you plan, especially for weekends and public holidays.
Is a phone app good enough or do I need a dezl?
A phone app is good enough for many drivers, since Sygic, Eurowag and Truckfly all offer truck profiles: Eurowag Navigation costs 79.99 EUR per year and Truckfly Premium 74.99 EUR per year, while Sygic Europe Truck is 74.99 EUR with an unstated licence term. A dezl LGV820 at 599.99 EUR to 699.99 EUR makes sense if you want a separate large screen and no dependence on your phone. Prices were checked on 2026-11-05 and vary by region.
Does the truck profile really matter?
Yes. The routing is only as accurate as the height, weight, length, width and axle count you enter, and a car profile will happily send an HGV under a low bridge. Check the profile whenever the trailer or load changes.
Pick one navigator, then add what it leaves out
Choose one truck navigator that fits your budget and trial it for 14 days where a trial is offered, then add separate checks for bans, parking and fuel. If you want those extras in one free app, install the Logifie Driver Assistant and send each parking or fuel stop from it straight to your navigator.
