Brenner A13 closed 30 May 2026: HGV transit ban from 07:00

The A13 Brenner motorway and parallel roads will be closed in both directions on 2026-05-30 for a court-permitted demonstration near Matrei am Brenner, with HGV transit over 7.5 tonnes banned southbound from 07:00 and northbound from 09:00. Germany’s Federal Foreign Office has described the day as a period of massive travel restrictions with no viable alternative route through Tyrol.

The A13 Brenner motorway and the parallel B182 Brennerstrasse and L38 Ellbögener Strasse will be closed in both directions on Saturday 2026-05-30 between the Schönberg toll station and the Brenner pass. The shutdown is for a court-permitted demonstration on the A13 carriageway near Matrei am Brenner. Heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes lose southbound transit from 07:00 Central European Summer Time and northbound transit from 09:00. That is two to four hours before the 11:00 to 19:00 ban window cited in most mainstream travel coverage. Germany’s Federal Foreign Office updated its Austria travel advisory on 2026-05-18, branding the day a period of massive travel restrictions with no viable alternative route through Tyrol.

What is closed on the Brenner A13, and for how long

The shutdown affects the full Alpine north-south corridor between Bavaria and South Tyrol. According to Land Tirol’s official information page , the A13 is sealed between Schönberg and the Brenner border crossing from 11:00 to 19:00 in both directions for all traffic. The B182 and L38 are closed for transit traffic across the same hours. For heavy commercial vehicles the IRU flash bulletin confirms that the demonstration on the A13 carriageway near Matrei am Brenner removes any local alternative, because Tirol authorities will simultaneously block the lower-rank road network to keep emergency lanes open. ASFINAG’s published forecast, reported by Verkehrsrundschau , is that more than 32,000 vehicles will be unable to cross on the day. According to ASFINAG annual traffic data, around 14 million vehicles use the Brenner route each year, making a single-day full stop unprecedented for this corridor.

Why HGV operators lose more than the published window

The trans-Tyrol HGV transit ban over 7.5 tonnes runs longer than the public-facing closure. Verkehrsrundschau confirms that the southbound HGV ban begins at 07:00 and the northbound ban at 09:00. That means the southbound operator-impact window is 12 hours and the northbound 10 hours, rather than 8 hours on either side. The Tirol provincial transit-traffic notice is unambiguous: transit by truck through the Brennerkorridor is not possible on 2026-05-30 and no local detour exists. The Reschenpass, Timmelsjoch and Felbertauernstrasse are unsuitable for diverted volumes and will be actively patrolled to turn back trucks routing through villages. Tyrol is urging long-distance traffic to detour via the Swiss Gotthard, San Bernardino or Reschen passes, but those Alpine crossings are already heavily loaded for the Pfingstferien holiday weekend and will not absorb diverted Brenner volume. The existing Brenner railway (Brennerbahn) stays open and is the only genuine rail alternative for time-critical loads.

What to do before 2026-05-30

Operators need to act now. Any 2026-05-30 Brenner-axis run should be re-planned so the truck is either north of the Inntal triangle or south of Vipiteno by Friday evening 2026-05-29. Where that is not possible, the cleanest option is to hold the truck off the corridor entirely. Shippers locked into Bavarian-Italian just-in-time flows should pre-position inventory on either side of the Brenner before Friday lunchtime. They should also write a Brenner-specific force-majeure note into delivery contracts covering the 2026-05-30 to 2026-06-02 window. Any driver still inside Tyrol on the morning of 2026-05-30 without a confirmed exit before 07:00 will not be permitted to continue south, regardless of cargo type.
