CargoBeamer intermodal semi-trailer flatcar moving through the French countryside, Calais–Perpignan freight corridor, June 2026

CargoBeamer is raising its Calais–Perpignan intermodal (unaccompanied semi-trailer rail) service to six weekly round trips from June 2026, after adding a fifth departure in April. The upgrade gives freight operators on UK-to-Spain and north-west Europe-to-Spain corridors a Monday-to-Saturday option covering approximately 1,000 km in 28 hours. The expansion was announced by RailFreight.com on 2026-05-27 and confirmed in trans.info reporting from 2026-05-28 .

What is changing on the Calais–Perpignan route

The service runs between CargoBeamer's terminal in Calais and the Perpignan Saint Charles Conteneur Terminal in southern France. Calais sits at the Channel Tunnel entrance and alongside major Dover-Calais short-sea routes, making it a natural interchange for UK freight heading south. Perpignan is close to the Spanish border, giving onward access to the greater Barcelona area and the wider Iberian market.

Cargo types accepted include both craneable and non-craneable semi-trailers, refrigerated units, ADR and tank trailers, and containers. Lineas has provided rail traction on the route since December 2025. The service began with two weekly round trips, grew to four in 2025, reached five in April 2026, and will reach six in June.

CargoBeamer told RailFreight.com it has seen a 40% demand increase on the corridor in six to eight months, which it attributes to improved rail reliability and fewer service cancellations following a period of disruptions.

Why road freight operators are taking notice

Road operating costs remain elevated across the EU. EU average diesel stood at EUR 1.942 per litre on 2026-05-22, according to the IRU fuel price bulletin from 2026-05-22 . European road freight contract rates stood at 140.1 index points in Q1 2026, up 8.9% year on year, according to the IRU × Upply × Ti Q1 2026 benchmark report . With costs still well above pre-war levels, operators on high-volume lanes are reassessing modal choices.

Structural road constraints add pressure on the corridor. Germany's Ferienreiseverordnung (the federal holiday-traffic ordinance) summer Saturday ban covers major transit Autobahns including the A1, A3, A5, A7, A8 and A9, applying 07:00–20:00 on Saturdays from early July through late August 2026, according to Impargo's 2026 European truck driving ban overview . For operators running UK-Spain or Germany-Spain freight volumes over summer, an intermodal option that avoids those Saturday restrictions is a practical alternative worth evaluating.

What operators on the corridor need to check

The most practically useful feature of the service is acceptance of non-craneable semi-trailers — standard road equipment that cannot be lifted by overhead crane at a terminal. No terminal-lift modification is required. Refrigerated units, ADR consignments, and tank trailers are also accepted.

Each unit shifted to rail saves more than 1,100 kg of CO₂ per load compared with an equivalent diesel road haul — a 93% reduction, according to CargoBeamer. The 28-hour transit compares with a two-day road movement covering the same distance at standard EU rest intervals. Germany truck speed limits and ban schedules are available on Logifie's dedicated page.

Operators moving regular volumes between the UK or northern Europe and the Iberian market can assess slot availability and pricing directly with CargoBeamer. For road freight covering the same lanes, request a freight quote on Logifie's platform for north-south European corridors.
