The cheapest diesel in Europe for trucks, on mainland road corridors, is in Poland at 1.78 EUR per litre. In the EU Weekly Oil Bulletin for prices in force on 2026-10-26 (published 2026-10-29), Spain and Bulgaria follow at 1.89 EUR, then Slovenia at 1.91 EUR and Hungary at 1.93 EUR. Malta shows 1.21 EUR, but it is an island with no road corridor, so it does not matter for a haul. This guide turns those numbers into fill-up decisions on three routes: Poland to Germany and the Netherlands, Romania to Italy, and Spain to France.

Every price here is a country average with taxes. It is not a station price. Prices at individual stations differ from the average, and VAT-registered hauliers reclaim VAT, so the pump figure overstates their net cost. The gaps between countries are what drive the plan.

Where is the cheapest diesel in Europe for trucks right now?

Poland is the cheapest mainland country on the latest bulletin data, at 1.78 EUR per litre, and the corridor countries to the west and south of it are all dearer. The table below covers the fifteen countries that matter on the three routes in this guide.

Table: country average diesel prices with taxes for prices in force on 2026-10-26, EU Weekly Oil Bulletin, published 2026-10-29. These are national averages, not station prices.

The cheap end sits in central and eastern Europe plus Spain, while Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany are 0.50 EUR or more above Poland. The figures already include temporary tax cuts, such as the German cut described later, so they can jump when a cut ends.

How to read a gap in EUR per litre

A gap per litre is easy to scale. This guide uses a 600 litre fill as a worked example. It is a round number for the arithmetic, not a sourced tank size. At about 33 litres per 100 km, the ICCT 2018 baseline for a loaded 40 tonne long-haul tractor, 600 litres covers about 1,800 km. Load, terrain and driving style can move that figure by up to a fifth.

Where should you fill up between Poland and Germany or the Netherlands?

Fill up in Poland before you leave it. Poland is 1.78 EUR per litre, Czechia is 1.95 EUR, Germany is 2.30 EUR and the Netherlands is 2.47 EUR on the same 2026-10-26 prices.

On those averages, a 600 litre fill bought in Poland instead of Germany saves 312 EUR (0.52 EUR per litre). Bought in Poland instead of the Netherlands, the same fill saves 414 EUR (0.69 EUR per litre). If your route crosses Czechia, a Polish fill still beats a Czech one by 0.17 EUR per litre, or 102 EUR on 600 litres.

Country averages hide station-to-station differences, so a station near the border may charge more or less than the Polish average. For country-level checks on this lane, open the Polish diesel page and compare it with Germany and the Netherlands.

Where is the cheapest diesel for trucks from Romania to Italy?

On this corridor, Hungary is the first cheap fill, and Slovenia is the last one before Italy. Romania sits at 2.04 EUR per litre, Hungary at 1.93 EUR, Austria at 2.13 EUR, Slovenia at 1.91 EUR, Croatia at 2.00 EUR and Italy at 2.25 EUR (all 2026-10-26).

Hungary is 0.11 EUR per litre cheaper than Romania on 2026-10-26, which is 66 EUR on a 600 litre fill. The Romanian price already includes its temporary excise cut, and Hungary still undercuts it.

There are two common ways to reach Italy, and the advice differs slightly:

  • Via Hungary and Slovenia. Fill in Hungary, top up in Slovenia at 1.91 EUR if the tank needs it, and enter Italy with as little diesel bought at the Italian price as possible. The gap between Slovenia and Italy is 0.34 EUR per litre, or 204 EUR on 600 litres.
  • Via Hungary and Austria. Austria is dearer than Hungary by 0.20 EUR per litre (120 EUR on 600 litres), so fill in Hungary and avoid buying in Austria. A Hungarian fill is 0.32 EUR per litre cheaper than Italy, which is 192 EUR on 600 litres.

On these averages the Slovenian route saves 12 EUR more on 600 litres: a 204 EUR saving against Italy, compared with 192 EUR via Austria.

Where is the cheapest diesel for trucks between Spain and France?

Fill up in Spain. Spain is 1.89 EUR per litre and France is 2.35 EUR per litre on the 2026-10-26 averages, a gap of 0.46 EUR per litre. On a 600 litre fill, buying in Spain instead of France saves 276 EUR.

Spain is also the only western European country in the cheapest group, so it works as the natural fill point for hauls heading north through France. Eligible hauliers can also claim part of the Spanish hydrocarbon tax back, as the section on dates below explains.

Is Luxembourg still the cheap spot in the Benelux and France?

Luxembourg is cheaper than all of its neighbours on the latest data, but the gap is smaller than the Poland gap. Luxembourg is at 2.05 EUR per litre, against Belgium at 2.38 EUR, France at 2.35 EUR and Germany at 2.30 EUR (2026-10-26).

On a 600 litre fill, that is a saving of 198 EUR against Belgium (0.33 EUR per litre), 180 EUR against France (0.30 EUR per litre) and 150 EUR against Germany (0.25 EUR per litre). Luxembourg is a short stop on most routes, so it works as a cheap top-up rather than a fill for a long leg.

Which dates change the plan?

Several measures that hold prices down end between 2026-11-30 and 2027-01-31, and the gaps in this guide will shift when they do.

  • Sweden, 2026-11-30. The temporary cut of 2.40 SEK per litre in CO2 tax on diesel runs from 2026-07-01 to 2026-11-30, according to Skatteverket . Sweden is outside the three corridors here, but it matters if your route reaches the Nordics.
  • Germany, 2026-12-31. The Bundesregierung cut the energy tax on diesel by 14.04 cents per litre from 2026-10-01 to 2026-12-31. Unless it is extended, the German price rises after that date, which widens the saving from filling in Poland.
  • EU METSAF aid, 2026-12-31. The temporary state aid framework for fuel costs is available until 2026-12-31, with no extension announced at the time of writing. The METSAF expiry guide explains what that means for hauliers.
  • Romania, 2027-01-31. The Romanian government extended the diesel excise cut from 2026-11-01 to 2027-01-31, adopted on 2026-10-30 . The size of the cut resets every two weeks, so the Romanian price can move even before the end date.

Professional refunds work on a different logic, because they reward the buyer rather than lower the pump price. Three apply to the corridors in this guide, all for vehicles of 7.5 tonnes or more:

  • Spain. The "gasóleo profesional" scheme refunds part of the hydrocarbon tax by bank transfer from the tax agency when diesel is paid with professional diesel cards, per the AEAT (page updated 2026-07-14). The separate temporary aid of 20 cents per litre covered diesel bought from 2026-03-22 to 2026-06-30 only and has ended.
  • Italy. A quarterly excise rebate is available to hauliers with vehicles of 7.5 tonnes or more and Euro 5 or above, claimed by electronic declaration to customs and used as a tax credit. Edotto reports that the window for the third quarter of 2026 closed on 2026-11-02, and eligible litres are capped at 1 litre per km. Check the dates for the next window.
  • France. France refunds part of the diesel excise (TICPE) to hauliers of 7.5 tonnes or more, about 15.56 EUR per hectolitre in 2026 according to CNR (January 2026), or about 0.16 EUR per litre, on diesel bought in metropolitan France. Confirm the current rate before you build it into a quote.

Which tools show diesel prices at a specific station?

Country averages tell you where to plan a fill, and station tools tell you where to stop. Three are worth knowing, and each has a limit.

  • nakordoni. Its fuel station map lists 146,421 stations, with filters for diesel, petrol, LPG, AdBlue and CNG, by country, plus a "truck-friendly" filter and a "find nearest" option that returns the five nearest. It does not show per-station prices on the map. Country prices sit on a separate page.
  • DKV Mobility app. The DKV Mobility app offers a station finder with map and list, filters, price comparison and station details, with prices described as updated daily. The page does not say whether the prices are pump prices or DKV contract prices.
  • UTA Edenred Drive. The app shows fuel prices where available, together with opening hours and services. It is free on iOS and Android but needs a UTA card, and UTA does not state the price basis on its pages either.

Logifie covers a different layer. The Logifie fuel page is free, needs no login and shows country-level weekly Oil Bulletin data in EUR and some local currencies, per litre or per 1,000 litres. It does not show station prices or AdBlue prices. The Logifie parking map can filter fuel stations by brand, accepted fuel card and "truck suitable only", but it shows no prices.

A practical workflow is to use country data to decide which country to fill in, then a station tool to find a truck-suitable station there, and then check the price at the pump.

Is a fuel card discount better than the cheapest pump price?

It depends on the contract, and the card apps do not settle the question for you. DKV and UTA do not state whether the prices they show are pump prices or contract prices, so a price in the app is not proof of what your invoice will say.

The simple test is to compare your own card invoice with the country average. Take a recent invoice, work out the price per litre after any discount and fees, and put it on the same VAT basis as the Oil Bulletin average for the same country and week. If the invoice price is lower than the average, the card is beating the typical pump. If it is higher, check what else the card is charging for.

The fuel cards guide covers how cards price fuel, and which fees to check. Keep in mind that the country gap can be large: in the examples above, the saving from choosing the right country is 0.11 to 0.69 EUR per litre, so compare both on your own invoices.

Frequently asked questions

Where is diesel cheapest in Europe for trucks right now?

On prices in force on 2026-10-26, the cheapest mainland country is Poland at 1.78 EUR per litre, followed by Spain and Bulgaria at 1.89 EUR, Slovenia at 1.91 EUR and Hungary at 1.93 EUR. Malta is lower at 1.21 EUR but is an island off the road corridors. These are country averages with taxes, not station prices.

Is it worth refuelling in Poland before Germany?

On the 2026-10-26 averages, yes: Poland is 0.52 EUR per litre cheaper than Germany, which is 312 EUR on a 600 litre worked example. The gap may widen if the German energy tax cut of 14.04 cents per litre ends on 2026-12-31 without an extension. Check the Polish price on the day, because a station near the border can price above or below the national average.

Do these prices include VAT?

Yes. The Weekly Oil Bulletin figures here are consumer pump prices with taxes, including excise and VAT. VAT-registered hauliers reclaim VAT, so their net cost is lower than the figure in the table.

How often do the prices change?

The Weekly Oil Bulletin publishes prices in force on a Monday, usually released a few days later. The latest verifiable figures in this guide are for 2026-10-26, published 2026-10-29. Tax cuts that end or reset, such as the Romanian two-week step, can move a price faster than the market does.

Where can I see diesel prices at a specific station?

Use a station-level tool such as the DKV Mobility app or the UTA Edenred Drive app, though neither states whether the price shown is a pump or contract price. The nakordoni map has a truck-friendly filter but shows no per-station prices.

Pick the country first, then the station. To compare the countries on your route week by week, open the free fuel price pages , which show the latest Oil Bulletin diesel prices by country without a login.
