Electric truck charging links Germany, Austria depots

FRYTE Mobility and SMATRICS are merging depot and public electric truck charging into one route-planning layer across Germany and Austria from 2026-08-25.

Two charging operators said on 2026-08-25 that they will pull depot and public charging points for electric trucks into a single route-planning layer across Germany and Austria. FRYTE Mobility and SMATRICS describe the arrangement as an open, cross-operator network, with reservations for selected sites planned from 2027. It targets the constraint that has held back electric road freight more than vehicle supply has: knowing in advance where a truck can actually plug in.

What the electric truck charging partnership connects

Under the partnership announced in Vienna , FRYTE integrates two layers of infrastructure into the route and charge planning that logistics companies already use. The first is the SMATRICS Depot Club, through which logistics companies share depot charging capacity with one another. The second is the public charge points SMATRICS operates directly. SMATRICS is a subsidiary of the utilities VERBUND and EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg and runs around 20,000 charging points.

For a depot owner, the practical effect is that charging capacity can be offered beyond the Depot Club itself. Many depot chargers today serve one fleet only and sit idle for long stretches. VerkehrsRundschau reported on 2026-08-27 that networking depot chargers is meant to raise utilisation and turn depot sites into commercial energy hubs rather than pure cost centres.

The technical basis is OCPI, an open communication standard used across electric mobility. Both partners already worked to it, so the charge points were integrated quickly. In the first phase the sites are simply made visible in a plan. From 2027 the partners intend to allow reservation of selected charge points, and later to pass reservation data to the energy management system at each site so that grid load and charging can be co-ordinated.

Why does charging access still limit electric truck uptake?

ACEA , the European automobile manufacturers' association, figures for the first half of 2026 show electrically-chargeable trucks up 47.7 percent year on year, at 4.8 percent of new EU truck registrations against 3.6 percent a year earlier. Diesel still took 92.1 percent.

Germany, the Netherlands and France together accounted for 74 percent of all EU electric-truck registrations in the period. ACEA said uptake remains below the pace required, held back by insufficient enabling conditions, particularly in the heavier segments.

Public infrastructure rules are catching up in parallel. The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation , Regulation (EU) 2023/1804, has applied since 2024-04-13 and sets distance-based recharging targets for heavy-duty vehicles along the TEN-T (Trans-European Transport Network) core and comprehensive networks. It also obliges member states to provide heavy-duty recharging in urban nodes and at safe and secure parking areas.

What changes for dispatchers, and what to watch

For a transport manager, the gain from the FRYTE/SMATRICS network is planning certainty rather than new hardware. Corridor hubs have been built along the main axes, but coverage thins out around depots, logistics parks and regional distribution centres. As trans.info reported on 2025-12-15 , that coverage gap pushed operators to open depot chargers to third parties when their own fleets did not need the capacity.

That third-party opening leaves one problem unresolved: semi-public depot pricing is set operator by operator and is not visible to outside users before a truck arrives. Public networks are moving the other way, with Milence base tariffs from 2026-01-01 running from EUR 0.339 per kWh in France and Spain to EUR 0.399 per kWh in Germany, the Netherlands and Italy, excluding VAT.

The pricing gap matters for cost control. Carriers running mixed fleets already compare charging costs against diesel prices by country , and an energy cost that cannot be seen at planning time cannot be quoted accurately. Reservation, promised for 2027, is the point at which a charging slot starts to behave like a booked loading slot.

Until then the work sits in the office. Charging windows have to be planned into shift patterns and driving-time limits the same way loading windows are. Charge-point availability then needs to reach the systems where journeys are built, from the transport management system through to vehicle tracking .
