The Euro 7 date for trucks is 2028-05-29 for new heavy-duty vehicle types and 2029-05-29 for all newly registered heavy-duty vehicles. The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) asked on 2026-10-20 for a two-year delay, but nothing is adopted. It applies to new trucks, not to trucks already registered.
When does Euro 7 apply to trucks?
Euro 7 sets two dates for heavy-duty vehicles, which include trucks, buses and trailers. The European Parliament's Legislative Observatory summary of Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, dated 2024-05-08, gives 2028-05-29 for new types and 2029-05-29 for all new vehicles.
A new type is a newly approved vehicle model. All new vehicles means every newly registered vehicle from that date, including models approved earlier. Euro 7 is a type-approval rule, so it applies to new trucks, not to trucks already registered.
| Vehicle group | Euro 7 date |
|---|---|
| Heavy-duty, new types | 2028-05-29 |
| Heavy-duty, all new vehicles | 2029-05-29 |
| Cars and vans, new types | 2026-11-29 |
| Cars and vans, all new vehicles | 2027-11-29 |
Small-volume manufacturers get more time: 2031-07-01 for M2, M3, N2 and N3 vehicles (buses and trucks) and 2030-07-01 for cars and vans. For trucks, Euro 7 tightens exhaust limits, adds on-board emissions monitoring and brings new brake and tyre abrasion rules. The Euro 6 versus Euro 7 explainer covers the technical changes.
What did truck makers ask to delay, and is it decided?
ACEA wrote to MEPs on 2026-10-20 asking for a two-year postponement of the heavy-duty application dates and a five-year postponement of the heavy-duty brake emission requirements, as trans.info reported on 2026-10-27.
The association says brake test procedures and vehicle-level requirements are not yet validated and that the UNECE heavy-duty brake test cycle is delayed. If both requests were granted, Euro 7 would apply to new truck types from 2030 and to all new trucks from 2031.
Other groups take the opposite position. T&E, POLIS, Clean Cities, the European Respiratory Society and Lungs Europe urged Parliament and Council in early October 2026 not to delay or weaken Euro 7 for heavy vehicles.
As of 2026-11-05, no Commission proposal to delay heavy-duty Euro 7 has been found, and the Legislative Train page shows no change. The dates 2028-05-29 and 2029-05-29 still stand in law. Whether Parliament or Council will act on the request is not known.
What should fleets with Euro VI trucks do?
Keep running them. The dates apply to new types and new vehicles, so existing Euro VI trucks fall outside the Euro 7 dates, and no retrofit duty has been reported. The decision point is purchasing: buyers planning orders around 2028 and 2029 should ask manufacturers which standard each model is approved to, and should not rely on the delay request.
Road-fuel carbon pricing under ETS2, due from 2028, is another fleet cost rule on the same horizon; the ETS2 guide explains it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Euro 7 apply to trucks already on the road?
No. The dates cover new types and new vehicles, and no retrofit duty has been reported for registered trucks. Euro VI trucks already registered fall outside these dates.
What is the difference between new types and all new vehicles?
New types are newly approved vehicle models and come first. All new vehicles is the later date when every newly registered vehicle must comply. For heavy-duty vehicles the gap is one year.
Has the Euro 7 date for trucks been delayed?
No. ACEA requested a delay on 2026-10-20, but as of 2026-11-05 nothing is adopted and the 2028-05-29 and 2029-05-29 dates stand.
When does Euro 7 apply to cars and vans?
New car and van types must comply from 2026-11-29, and all new cars and vans from 2027-11-29. Those dates are separate from the heavy-duty schedule.
