Stylised map of Europe with a truck route and six marked checkpoints for route, rest stop, driving ban, parking, diesel and toll

No free tool we checked covers a full European HGV trip: the Basic online planner from Impargo and official toll calculators such as the one on e-TOLL Poland cost nothing, while Eurowag Navigation gives a 14-day trial and then charges EUR 79.99 per year (checked 2026-11-05). Sygic Truck and TomTom GO Expert also sit behind a trial or a paid plan. A complete plan needs a route built with a truck profile, plus separate checks for driving bans, parking, diesel and tolls. This guide shows what each option really gives away and the order of six checks that turns one route into a plan.

Is there a free truck route planner for Europe, and what does free mean?

Free comes in three forms, and only one of them is free for good. A free tier stays free but limits features. A trial gives full features for a short period and then locks them. A paid product has no free use at all, apart from what a store lets you try.

Here is how the main options sort out, based on each vendor page and store listing checked on 2026-11-05:

  • Free tier: Impargo states that its online route planner is part of the free Basic plan for 3.5 t, 7.5 t and 40 t vehicles. The page does not list the limits of that plan, so read them before you rely on it for a long trip.
  • Trial: Sygic's help centre says Premium features can be tested free for 7 days after the first install, after which Premium locks and the free features stay. Some older sources quote 14 days, so confirm the length when you install.
  • Trial then paid: Eurowag Navigation Premium costs EUR 79.99 per year after a 14-day trial, and adds offline maps, advanced lane guidance and truck-specific warnings.
  • Paid: TomTom GO Expert, formerly GO Truck, is sold as a truck subscription. Store prices differ by country, so check your own store.
  • Official and free: national toll operators publish their own calculators. They estimate a toll, not a final invoice.

The comparison below puts these side by side, with the limit of each.

The Logifie row covers only the checks that Logifie tools support: map of truck parking and fuel stations, live parking in Germany, weekly diesel averages, public holidays and a cost-per-km estimate. Logifie is not a route planner or a navigator, and nothing below replaces one.

How do you build the base route with a truck profile?

Start with the route, and enter the real vehicle before you look at a single road. Height, gross weight, length, axle load and any ADR (dangerous goods) class decide which roads, tunnels and bridges you may use. A general car planner ignores most of these values, so it can send a 40 t combination under a low bridge or through a weight-limited town.

Pick a planner from the table and set its vehicle class to match your truck, not the closest one. Impargo lists 3.5 t, 7.5 t and 40 t classes. If none of them matches your gross weight, treat the result as a draft and check weight limits on the road signs.

Save the route as stops and legs, and note the planned distance and driving time per day. You will need both numbers in the next two checks. Keep one rule in mind: the planner proposes, the road sign decides. A posted restriction always beats the screen.

Fleets that dispatch many trucks need a different class of product, with API access, tracking and driver apps. For that, see the B2B HGV route planning software guide . The rest of this post is for a driver or owner-operator doing the work with free or low-cost tools.

How do you plan breaks and rest under Regulation (EC) 561/2006?

Place the first stop before 4.5 hours of driving, not at the limit. The European Commission summary of Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 sets these limits:

  • Daily driving is 9 hours, extendable to 10 hours up to twice a week.
  • Weekly driving is capped at 56 hours, and driving across two consecutive weeks at 90 hours.
  • A 45 minute break is due after 4.5 hours of driving at the latest. It may be split into 15 minutes first and 30 minutes second.
  • Daily rest is at least 11 hours. It may be cut to 9 hours up to three times a week, or split into 3 hours and 9 hours.
  • Weekly rest is 45 hours. It may be reduced to 24 hours every second week, with compensation.

Limited overruns of up to 1 hour (2 hours for a regular weekly rest) are allowed to reach home or the operating base. The consolidated legal text is on EUR-Lex , and the Commission page is a summary, so use the regulation for edge cases.

Work backwards from these limits when you read the route. Mark the point where about 4 hours of driving ends, and look for parking within the next 30 minutes of road. Choose the stop before the clock runs out, because a full lot at hour 4.4 leaves no safe option. Where possible, make the same stop do three jobs: break, fuel and a parking spot for the longer rest. This is planning advice, not a rule in the regulation.

How do you check driving bans and public holidays by country?

Check bans after the route is set, because they differ by country and by day. I found no EU-wide ban calendar, so each country needs its own check, and a holiday list alone is not enough.

Two examples from official portals show how much the rules vary:

  • Germany: trucks over 7.5 t, and any truck with a trailer, may not drive on Sundays and public holidays from 00:00 to 22:00 under paragraph 30 of the StVO. The Bavarian state portal, in a page dated 2026-03-31, describes the Sunday ban and adds a summer Saturday ban from 1 July to 31 August, 07:00 to 20:00, on named road sections. The page does not list those sections.
  • Austria: the business portal usp.gv.at, updated 2026-02-17, lists a Saturday ban from 15:00 to 24:00, and a Sunday and holiday ban from 00:00 to 22:00. A night ban from 22:00 to 05:00 applies to trucks over 7.5 t. It also covers trucks towing a trailer if the truck or the trailer is over 3.5 t, and exempts essential local supply such as food deliveries.

Next, use the public holiday calendar by country and year to see which dates are holidays in each country on your route. It lists public holidays, not every national ban rule, so it tells you which dates to check and not what is banned on them. Confirm the actual ban, its exemptions and any regional extras with the national authority before departure. For Germany that means BALM, and for Austria the RIS legal database.

Holiday dates differ by country, so a route that crosses several borders can meet several different holiday dates. Check the dates for the year you travel in, including 2027.

Where should you park along the route?

Choose the overnight and rest stops now, with a second option for each. The map of truck parking and fuel stations covers 31 countries, with a page per country such as /parking/de. It shows two layers, parking areas and gas stations, and a detail card per location.

The detail card can show capacity, paid or free, toilets, showers, lighting, fencing and opening hours, but only where the underlying record has that data. Gas stations can be filtered by brand, accepted fuel card and a truck-suitable switch. The map has no live occupancy outside Germany and no booking function. Its data comes from OpenStreetMap contributors and Fraunhofer/KAMO, so treat every card as informational and check on arrival.

For Germany, live truck parking occupancy adds a status for around 1,850 motorway rest areas: available, almost full, full, or grey for closed or unknown. The feed is the SID service published through Mobilithek and refreshes in the page every 60 seconds. A status turns grey after 15 minutes without an update, and the page warns that values may lag real conditions by several minutes. A green pin does not guarantee a free space when you arrive. Private sites and roads outside the motorway network are not part of this view.

Use both as a shortlist, then navigate with your planner. Logifie tools hand the destination to an external app, but they do not give turn-by-turn guidance.

Where should you stop for diesel, and what do fuel prices on a map mean?

Fuel decisions at route level start with the country, because diesel prices change at borders. The fuel price page shows country-level average petrol and diesel prices, per litre or per 1,000 litres. The figures come from the European Commission Weekly Oil Bulletin , which is published once a week. These are weekly averages, not live prices and not station prices.

That makes the page good for deciding where to fill up across a border and poor for finding the cheapest pump on the road. It does not show AdBlue prices or fuel card discounts either. For the second question, use your fuel card network, and use the parking map filter to see which gas stations accept your card. Prices at the pump may differ from the published average, so plan the fill-up around your tank range and keep margin.

How do you estimate tolls and total trip cost?

Use the operator for the toll and a cost tool for the trip. Each toll operator knows its own tariff, and tariffs change often, so a calculator on an official site is the right source and any third-party figure is a guess. I quote no price per kilometre here for that reason.

Poland offers a clear example. The official e-TOLL site has a toll road network calculator where you search a route and see an estimated cost, and a vehicle classification tool that gives the electronic toll rate per kilometre from vehicle parameters. The site notes that electronic toll rates changed from 2026-02-01. For Germany and Austria, use the official tariff pages of Toll Collect and ASFINAG, and check the vehicle class and axle count you enter. Treat every result as an estimate, since the invoice can differ.

For the whole trip, the freight cost calculator estimates the carrier cost per loaded kilometre, with a toll line included. It is free and needs no signup. You enter the diesel price net of VAT, your running costs, the trip distance and the toll kilometres per country, and it returns cost per kilometre, break-even rate, a cost breakdown and a PDF.

The limits are real. Tolls are averaged per country for 23 countries and are not route-exact. Bridges, tunnels and private concession motorways are excluded, and countries such as the United Kingdom, Norway and Turkey are not covered. The tool does not compute route distance, so take that figure from your planner. It is a carrier cost tool, not a price quote for a shipper.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Maps good enough to plan a truck route in Europe?

Not on its own. General planners are built around cars and do not ask for your truck height, weight or axle load, so the route may not be legal or physically passable. Use a planner with a truck profile for the road itself.

Does Sygic stay free after the trial?

The free features stay, and Premium features lock after the trial. Sygic's help centre gives a 7-day trial after first install, and some older sources quote 14 days, so check the length on your device. Licence prices vary by country store.

Is Eurowag Navigation free?

The vendor page shows a 14-day free trial of Premium, then EUR 79.99 per year. It does not say which features remain after the trial, so do not assume core navigation stays free.

Can I navigate with Logifie tools?

No. The map of parking and fuel stations hands a destination to an external app such as Sygic Truck, TomTom, Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps. Logifie tools help you choose stops, check holidays and estimate costs, but they do not provide turn-by-turn navigation.

Are toll calculator results exact?

No. Official calculators give estimates, and the final invoice can differ with vehicle class, route and tariff changes. Tariffs change often, so use the operator site for the year and date of your trip.

Does the holiday calendar show truck bans?

The web calendar lists public holidays per country and year, and marks a holiday as fixed, global or regional. It does not give the full weekend or night ban rules of each country. Confirm bans with the national authority before departure.

Can I use these tools offline?

Do not count on it. Eurowag states that Premium adds offline maps. For Logifie, the parking map, live German occupancy and fuel pages fetch data online, so download your route and key stops in your navigation app before you leave coverage.

Work through the six checks in order, because each one feeds the next. To keep parking, fuel and holiday checks on your phone during the trip, download the free Logifie Driver Assistant . It needs no registration and opens your chosen navigation app for the drive itself.
