Heavy goods vehicles queueing at a German land border checkpoint during extended border controls

German Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt formally notified the European Commission on 2026-08-19 that Germany will extend border controls at all its land frontiers for a further six months, until mid-March 2027, meaning six more months of queues for hauliers. It is the fourth prolongation since Germany reintroduced controls at every land frontier on 2024-09-16, and it locks in another half year of unpredictable transit times on some of the busiest road freight corridors in Europe. Carriers running Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, France and the Benelux into Germany now have planning certainty of the wrong kind.

How the border controls extension works

The extension was notified to Brussels, not simply decided in Berlin. Under the Schengen Borders Code, a member state that wants to keep internal border checks must notify the Commission, the European Parliament, the Council and the other member states at least four weeks in advance. Prolongations then run in six-month blocks, as set out in the Commission's rules on the temporary reintroduction of border control . If the Commission does not object, the German checks continue past their current expiry in mid-September 2026 without further steps. Dobrindt justified the move by pointing to developments at the European external borders, saying that pushing back irregular migration still requires controls, Handelsblatt reported. The regime has already been prolonged three times since it was first ordered in September 2024.

The freight bill lands on the Polish border

For road freight the sharpest effects sit on the German-Polish frontier, where checks have been running since October 2023. The IHK Ostbrandenburg chamber of commerce said on 2026-08-20 that it is disappointed by the renewal, having expected the checks to end this year. Its head of regional policy, Robert Radzimanowski, said journey times remain hard to calculate because of queues at the control points, which feeds straight through into extra cost for forwarders and carriers, VerkehrsRundschau reported. Revised lane arrangements on the A12 entering Germany have improved matters, but tailbacks persist. Polish operators describe the same pinch point from the other side: as of early 2026, Świecko was the worst affected crossing, with slow traffic stretching 15 to 20 kilometres back from the border at peak times, while Kołbaskowo-Pomellen ran largely undisturbed, Rynek Infrastruktury reported.

Federal Police operations along all German land borders cost EUR 80.5 million between mid-September 2024 and 30 June 2025, of which EUR 37.9 million was overtime, according to a written parliamentary inquiry answered by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, ZDFheute reported. On the German-Dutch corridor specifically, the Dutch traffic authority Rijkswaterstaat has estimated average delays for crossing traffic at 15 to 30 minutes per trip, trans.info reported on 2025-11-04. For a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) fleet making several crossings a day, that is a standing charge on utilisation, not an occasional disruption.

The practical answer is to treat every crossing as a scheduled dwell instead of a rounding error. That works when live position data feeds the plan: GPS tracking and a transport management system that recalculates arrival times as the queue builds.

Drivers pushed past their driving window by an unexpected hold also need somewhere legal to stop. The live German truck parking map shows rest-area occupancy on the Autobahn network in real time.

What could change before March 2027

Three developments could still shift the picture. In June 2026 the Commission had already issued opinions arguing for the gradual lifting of internal border checks reintroduced by nine Schengen states including Germany, European Commission said. EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner renewed that call in early August 2026, saying it was time to gradually abolish the checks now that irregular crossings at the EU's external borders had fallen by about a third and the bloc's new asylum rules had taken effect, European Newsroom reported. The reformed Common European Asylum System has applied since June 2026 and moves asylum procedures to the EU external border, which erodes the stated justification for internal checks; Brandenburg's migration minister, René Wilke, said border controls must remain a temporary measure, VerkehrsRundschau reported. Working the other way, the IHK expects Poland to mirror the German decision and prolong its own controls, which would keep both directions of the corridor slow.

If your schedules into or out of Germany are now carrying six more months of border risk, build the crossing time into the transit plan rather than into the delay report. Request a quote and we will price the corridor as it actually runs today.
