Germany's Autobahn truck parking crisis

Germany moves more road freight than any other EU member state. That volume puts enormous pressure on the roughly 35,000 truck parking bays spread across the Autobahn network — and demand outstrips supply every night. A Federal Ministry of Transport survey found that Germany still needs close to 20,000 additional HGV bays; industry bodies put the real shortfall even higher. Building new motorway truck parks takes up to ten years from planning to completion, which means digital tools that make existing spaces more visible are the fastest lever available.

The practical consequence for drivers is severe. A 2025 spot count in eastern Germany recorded 2,168 trucks parked at rest areas built for 1,412 — roughly 50 percent over designed capacity. Drivers who cannot find a legal space face a difficult choice: continue driving and risk a rest-time infringement under EU Regulation 561/2006, or stop illegally and risk a EUR 70 fine plus penalty points on the Autobahn. Neither outcome is acceptable — and the German government is now acting at scale.

What is SID? Germany's official occupancy feed

SID — Stellplatz-Informationsdienst (parking information service) — is a joint project of Toll Collect, the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV), the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM), Autobahn GmbH, and the Federal Road Research Institute (BASt). Officially launched on 2 June 2026 after a successful pilot phase, SID covers all 1,850 public rest areas on German motorways and is part of the BMV's five-point plan for improving HGV parking nationwide.

The data comes from the HGV toll system. Every truck fitted with a Toll Collect on-board unit — or using a European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) provider — transmits anonymised GPS position data as part of the toll process. Toll Collect aggregates those positions, calculates the occupancy of each rest area, and publishes the result to Mobilithek , Germany's federal mobility data platform, in standardised DATEX II XML format — updated every minute.

How SID occupancy categories work

SID does not expose raw vehicle counts. Instead, Toll Collect processes the GPS data and classifies each rest area into one of three standardised occupancy thresholds, which map directly to the coloured pins visible on the Logifie SID map .

Map pin colourSID categoryWhat it means for drivers
GreenspacesAvailableSpaces are free — proceed with confidence
AmberalmostFullFilling up fast — identify a backup option
RedfullNo spaces reported — seek another rest area
GreyUnknown or closedNo live data — treat as unavailable and plan an alternative

Data quality improves continuously. EETS provider data — which covers foreign-registered HGVs not equipped with a Toll Collect OBU — became fully available from January 2026, significantly broadening the occupancy picture. A second phase of SID will expand to federal trunk road rest areas (Bundesstraßen) and eventually private truck parks and Autohöfe.

Logifie's free live parking map for Germany

Logifie integrated the SID feed at logifie.com/sid-parking . The page loads all 1,850 motorway rest areas as live-coloured pins on a Leaflet map. Pins cluster at low zoom levels so the overview stays readable on any screen size; zoom in to an individual rest area to see its current occupancy status. The data shown reflects conditions a few minutes ago — not hours old.

No account is required. The tool is free, as part of Logifie's suite of driver tools alongside the EU fuel price map , truck speed limits by country , and the public holiday calendar . Use them together to build a complete rest-stop and route strategy before departure.

EU rest time rules: why parking timing is critical

EU Regulation 561/2006 sets strict limits on driving and rest time for professional HGV drivers across all 27 member states. Understanding these limits makes clear why live parking data is not a convenience — it is a compliance tool. Miss a parking space with ten minutes of driving time left, and you are choosing between a violation and an illegal stop.

RuleLimit under Regulation 561/2006
Daily driving9 hours maximum (extendable to 10 hours twice per week)
Continuous drivingMaximum 4.5 hours before a mandatory break
Break durationAt least 45 minutes (can be split: 15 minutes then 30 minutes)
Daily restMinimum 11 consecutive hours (reducible to 9 hours up to 3 times between weekly rests)
Weekly rest45 consecutive hours (reducible to 24 hours every other week, with compensation)
Weekly drivingMaximum 56 hours; fortnightly maximum 90 hours
⚠️

Since 2022, regular weekly rest periods (45 hours) must not be taken in the vehicle cabin. Drivers must use accommodation with adequate sleeping and sanitary facilities. Enforcement agencies across Europe check for cabin-rest violations; fines vary by member state but can be substantial.

When a driver's 4.5-hour continuous driving window is about to close and nearby rest areas appear full or unknown on the SID map, the data lets them search early — before the final junction, not after it. Check the live parking map at least 30 minutes before your break is due, particularly on the A7, A9, A5, and A4 corridors where demand is highest on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

Which other apps use SID data?

Because SID is open data published via Mobilithek, any developer can integrate it. On 2 June 2026 — the same day SID went fully live — HERE Technologies announced the integration of Toll Collect SID data into HERE WeGo Pro, its professional HGV navigation application. The integration embeds occupancy directly into the turn-by-turn routing experience so drivers do not need to switch apps. Toll4Europe had already piloted SID in its German-market toll payment app. More integrations are expected as the dataset matures and the second phase adds private parking.

The open nature of the feed is deliberate government policy. Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder described SID as a "digital upgrade with great impact for freight transport and Germany as a logistics hub" — and the data being free to redistribute means the ecosystem of apps serving drivers can grow without licensing barriers.

Plan smarter: combine parking with fuel and speed data

A reliable rest-stop plan covers more than just parking. Use Logifie's free driver tools together: check the live SID parking map to confirm space at your planned stop, check current diesel prices near the route to decide whether to refuel before or after the rest, and verify truck speed limits per country on multi-border runs. For cross-border operators, the public holiday calendar shows loading and unloading restrictions days in advance — so you do not arrive at a closed receiver after a long overnight drive.

For fleet managers and logistics operators running multiple trucks across European corridors, Logifie's TMS platform offers AI-based route optimisation, real-time GPS tracking, and live ETAs across 27+ countries. Frequently asked questions

Is SID data free to use?

Yes. SID data is published under the dl-de/by-2-0 open data licence, which permits free use and redistribution provided attribution is given to Toll Collect and Mobilithek. Logifie's map page carries the required attribution. The Mobilithek API endpoint is also freely accessible to developers who want to build their own integrations.

How often does the occupancy data update?

The Mobilithek feed publishes new SID data every minute. Logifie's map refreshes from the feed continuously, so the occupancy status displayed reflects conditions a few minutes ago — not hours old. This is materially more useful than static capacity data, which does not account for real-time arrivals and departures.

Does SID cover private truck parks and Autohöfe?

Not yet. The current SID feed covers the 1,850 public rest areas on German motorways only. In a planned second phase, the BMV intends to add rest areas on federal trunk roads (Bundesstraßen) and eventually private operators such as Autohöfe and secure parking providers. No confirmed timeline for phase 2 has been published.

What is the fine for illegal parking on the German Autobahn?

Stopping or parking on the Autobahn outside designated areas carries a fine of EUR 70 plus penalty points under German road traffic law. Enforcement is carried out by the Autobahnpolizei and BAG inspectors. For drivers also in breach of rest-time rules, tachograph violations can result in significantly higher penalties — and, in serious cases, vehicle immobilisation.

Does the Logifie parking map work on mobile?

Yes. The SID parking map is fully responsive and works in any modern mobile browser. For a more integrated experience, Logifie also offers the Driver Assistant app for iOS and Android, which combines route guidance, real-time GPS tracking, and links to all Logifie's free driver tools in one place.

Which countries have similar live parking systems?

Germany is currently the most advanced in Europe for live HGV parking occupancy data at national scale. The Netherlands and France have local schemes at individual service areas, but no other EU member state has a government-mandated, nationwide real-time feed comparable to SID. Logifie monitors European data availability and will add live coverage for other countries as official feeds become available.
