Trucks over 7.5 t may not drive on Italian roads outside built-up areas on seven days in December 2026: Sundays 2026-12-06, 2026-12-13, 2026-12-20 and 2026-12-27, plus Tuesday 2026-12-08, Friday 2026-12-25 and Saturday 2026-12-26. Every ban runs from 09:00 to 22:00. 24 and 31 December are not ban days.

Which days does the Italian truck ban cover in December 2026?

The 2026 calendar decree of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT), registered by the Court of Audit on 2025-12-24 and announced on 2025-12-30, lists seven December days in its Annex A. Four are Sundays: 6, 13, 20 and 27 December. The other three are public holidays: Tuesday 8 December (Immaculate Conception), Friday 25 December (Christmas Day) and Saturday 26 December (Saint Stephen's Day).

The ban applies to goods vehicles and vehicle combinations with a maximum authorised mass above 7.5 t. The stretch to plan around is 25 to 27 December, which gives three ban days in a row. Our Italy public holiday calendar for 2026 shows the same dates next to the other national holidays, and the Italy truck ban times and rules guide covers the rest of the year.

Is there a truck ban in Italy on 24 or 31 December 2026?

No. Both 2026-12-24 and 2026-12-31 fall on a Thursday and neither appears in the December table of the decree, so no national ban applies and trucks may run as on any other weekday. Local restrictions such as roadworks or snow measures can still apply, because they sit outside this national calendar.

How do border crossings and islands change the ban hours?

The decree shifts the hours when the driver carries documents proving the origin and destination of the load. A vehicle arriving from abroad starts its ban four hours later, so 13:00 instead of 09:00. A vehicle heading abroad has its ban end two hours earlier, at 20:00 instead of 22:00. For a solo driver arriving from abroad whose daily rest under Regulation (EC) 561/2006 ends after the ban starts, the four hours count from the end of that rest. Articles 4 and 5 give similar four-hour shifts for Sardinia and Sicily.

Once the ban lifts, Italian HGV speed limits still apply on the way out of the country.

Frequently asked questions

What weight limit triggers the Italian truck ban?

The calendar applies to goods vehicles and combinations with a maximum authorised mass above 7.5 t. The same decree also regulates some dangerous-goods transport below that threshold, so check it if you carry such loads.

Are 8 December and 26 December truck ban days in Italy?

Yes. In 2026 both fall in Annex A of the decree, 8 December on a Tuesday and 26 December on a Saturday. Each runs from 09:00 to 22:00, like the Sunday and Christmas Day bans.

What are the Italian truck ban hours in December 2026?

Every December ban day uses the same window of 09:00 to 22:00. Vehicles coming from abroad with proper documents start four hours later, and vehicles leaving for abroad finish two hours earlier.

Where can I read the official 2026 calendar?

The MIT publishes it on its truck ban calendar page , with the decree as a PDF. Annex A holds the month-by-month table.
