Italy truck strike 25-29 May 2026: UNATRAS confirms stop

UNATRAS has confirmed a 120-hour Italian truck strike from 00:01 on 2026-05-25 to 24:00 on 2026-05-29 unless the Meloni government acts on diesel excise duty, contribution payments and tax-credit timelines.

UNATRAS, the federation that brings together ten Italian haulier associations, has confirmed a national truck strike running for 120 consecutive hours, from 00:01 on 2026-05-25 to 24:00 on 2026-05-29. The dates were communicated to the Italian Strike Authority on 2026-04-20 and reconfirmed by the union's leadership on 2026-05-07, trans.info reported on 2026-05-18 . UNATRAS says the stoppage will be revoked only if the Meloni government produces an emergency package on diesel excise duty, social-security payments and tax-credit timelines before the start window.

What UNATRAS is demanding

The trigger is the cost of commercial diesel. Italian pump prices crossed 2 EUR per litre in late April after Brent traded above USD 100 per barrel following the Iran war that began on 2026-02-28.

Pan-European diesel rose from EUR 1.56 to EUR 1.96 per litre between the end of Q4 2025 and the end of Q1 2026, an IRU benchmark released on 2026-05-05 confirms . The European Commission Weekly Oil Bulletin publishes the underlying weekly pump data. Italy cut retail excise duty for citizens but excluded haulier reimbursements under the long-standing gasolio commerciale regime. UNATRAS president Paolo Uggé says that mismatch leaves operators with a net loss of around 0.40 EUR per litre versus the public price.

The federation is asking for three measures. It wants a temporary suspension of social-security and INAIL contribution payments to ease cash flow. It wants the silent-consent window for the diesel excise tax credit cut from 60 days to 10 days. And it wants dedicated financial support for hauliers that continue investing in road safety and environmental upgrades. The amounts have been submitted in preliminary form to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

The fiscal background, including which countries cut retail diesel and which did not, is covered in our EU diesel below 2 euros May 2026 fiscal packages piece.

How and when the stoppage takes effect

The fermo nazionale begins at 00:01 on 2026-05-25 and lasts until 24:00 on 2026-05-29. It covers five weekdays and removes roughly 80 percent of Italian-registered tractor capacity from the network for that window. Foreign-registered hauliers and transit fleets are not bound by the UNATRAS call and may continue to operate. Italian tractors account for about a third of southbound trans-Alpine flows, so Brenner, Frejus and Mont Blanc corridor capacity will shift even if the tunnels stay open.

Local UNATRAS structures will file formal notifications with prefectures, police chiefs and local unions. They have committed to maintaining road safety throughout the mobilisation, as Trasporti-Italia detailed on 2026-05-13 .

Supermarket distribution centres in Italy typically hold three to five days of stock for fresh produce and dairy, so the 120-hour window sits at the upper edge of that buffer. Just-in-time industries — Stellantis plants in Melfi and Pomigliano, pharmaceutical clusters in Lazio and Lombardia, electronics in the south — would feel pressure between day three and day five. Ports at Genoa, Livorno, La Spezia and Gioia Tauro depend on truck collections for both inbound containers and outbound exports. A multi-day stop tends to translate into container build-up and longer dwell times once trucks return.

What hauliers and shippers should do this week

Italy's transport minister Matteo Salvini has signalled serious concern about the strike. He is hunting for fiscal coverage to meet the union's demands, Il Sole 24 Ore reported on 2026-04-21 . Whether the strike goes ahead will depend on the talks at Porta Pia in the next four working days.

Shippers with Italian volume should bring forward critical loads originally scheduled between 2026-05-25 and 2026-05-29. They should prioritise inbound port collections during the week of 2026-05-18 and the morning of 2026-05-25, and confirm contingency capacity with foreign-registered carriers who are not bound by the call.

Carriers running through Italy on trans-European lanes should expect rerouting demand and reduced last-mile coverage, even if their own units remain mobile. The fuel-cost backdrop will not disappear after the strike window — operators are already absorbing diesel above 2 EUR per litre. Our offsetting rising fuel costs guide covers the pricing and surcharge mechanics that protect margin during shocks of this length.

Logifie is matching shippers with foreign-registered capacity for the 2026-05-25 to 2026-05-29 window. Request a quote and we will hold options on Italy-bound and Italy-out lanes through 2026-05-24.
