The new trucks for 2027 are mostly engine and driveline updates: the Volvo D13 diesel and G13 gas engines, the Mercedes-Benz Powerliner driveline, the Renault Trucks DE13 R engine, and new electric tractors from MAN, DAF, Scania and Iveco. Volvo Trucks announced on 2026-05-11 that sales of its new 13-litre platform start in Q3 2026 ( Volvo Trucks press release ), and diesel still made up 93.2% of new EU trucks in 2025 ( ACEA data, reported by newmobility.news on 2026-01-29 ). This guide lists what each of the seven makers has confirmed, says plainly where a maker has announced nothing new, and explains which update matters for which kind of operation. Information is current as of 2026-11-05, so recheck dates with your dealer before you sign an order.

What actually changes in European tractor units for 2027?

Most of the change sits under the cab. Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and Renault Trucks each present a new or revised diesel engine, Volvo adds a gas version of its new engine, and MAN adds driver-assist functions to the TGX. Electric tractors from MAN, Scania, DAF, Renault, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and Iveco publish ranges of 500 km or more, while hydrogen stays at small-series or test stage.

A few points frame everything below:

  • Fuel-saving figures are maker claims, not independent tests. Each maker uses a different comparison basis, so this guide does not rank makers by percentage.
  • Diesel remains the volume choice. In 2025 the EU registered 307,460 new medium and heavy trucks, down 6.2% on 2024, and electric rose to 4.2% from 2.3% while LNG and CNG together held 2.6% (ACEA data, as in the opening paragraph).
  • Electric models get a short summary here. Range, charging and model detail sit in the electric tractor unit comparison linked in the electric section below.

Maker by maker: what did each brand announce for 2027?

Every row below comes from a maker press release. Where a figure appears, the comparison basis is stated next to it, and the bases are not the same from row to row.

Volvo Trucks

Volvo introduced the D13 diesel (380 to 560 hp, 1,800 to 2,900 Nm) and the G13 gas engine (420 to 500 hp, 2,400 to 2,800 Nm), both built first at Skovde. The engines are rated for B100, HVO, bio-LNG and green hydrogen, and they meet the NNR3 noise rules ( Volvo Trucks press release, 2026-05-11 ). At IAA Transportation 2026 Volvo also showed an FH16 Aero, an FH Aero gas truck and a hydrogen combustion test truck that it plans to launch before 2030, plus an FH Aero Electric with up to 700 km range ( Volvo Trucks via Cision, 2026-07-01 ). The jury of the International Truck of the Year 2027 award picked Volvo's battery-electric heavy range. That is a jury award for one range, not a ranking of the whole market.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks

The Powerliner generation revises the OM 470 (360 to 455 hp, 1,800 to 2,200 Nm) and the OM 471 (421 to 550 hp across four ratings, 2,200 to 2,800 Nm). The OM 471 gains a new top rating, and the recommended long-haul set-up pairs it with the G 291 gearbox and a long axle ratio ( Daimler Truck press release, 2026-09-13 ). On the electric side, the eActros 600 and 400 Lowliner is a low fifth-wheel 4x2 tractor for mega trailers, with orders from Q3 2026 and series production at Woerth from Q2 2027. A hydrogen small series of about 100 NextGenH2 trucks follows, with Dachser as first customer and the first truck due at the end of December 2026 ( Daimler Truck IAA outlook, June 2026 ).

Renault Trucks

The T High 2027 gets the DE13 R engine with up to 540 hp and up to 2,800 Nm, paired with a new Optidriver gearbox, and Renault claims up to 4% less fuel and CO2 than the predecessor. The release gives no sales date. The electric E-Tech T 780 reaches up to 660 km and has been orderable since 2025-11-18 ( Renault Trucks post on the IAA Transportation site, 2026-07-02 ).

MAN

MAN announced PredictiveDrive, which reads the road 3 km ahead, and EBA Advanced emergency braking, which meets legal requirements that take effect in September 2028 ( MAN press release, 2026-10-14 ). MAN has published no verified diesel engine figure for 2027 in its newsroom. The new eTGX reaches up to 720 km (6x2, 644 kWh) or 660 km (4x2, 552 kWh), charges at up to 750 kW through MCS in about 30 minutes, and is up to 3% more efficient than its predecessor ( MAN press release, 2026-10-22 ).

DAF

DAF added Drowsiness and Distraction Detection, which warns when the driver's eyes leave the road for more than 6 seconds, along with On Board Fuel Monitoring, On Board Weight Monitoring and remote software updates. It also showed a 10x4 rigid up to 54 t, a low car-transporter chassis, and a Single Driver Luxury Package with a 90 cm Relax Bed in the XG and XG+ ( DAF press release, 2026-09-14 ). The DAF release names no new diesel engine and gives no fuel-saving figure. The XG and XG+ Electric entered series production at Eindhoven, with over 500 km on 5 battery packs ( DAF press release, 2026-05-06 ).

Scania

The Scania newsroom pages checked for this guide list no new 13-litre engine for 2027. Its latest verified diesel item is the Super 11, a lighter five-cylinder 11-litre unit rated at 350 hp / 1,800 Nm, 390 hp / 2,000 Nm and 430 hp / 2,200 Nm, with a new 14-speed gearbox and HVO across the range. Scania quotes 7% lower fuel burn than the previous 9-litre five-cylinder and maintenance intervals up to 30% longer ( Scania newsroom ). The long-haul battery option with 720 kWh reaches up to 720 km at 42 t and is available early 2027 ( Scania battery-electric truck page ).

Iveco

No Iveco-issued release with 2027 figures was available at the time of writing, so this guide quotes no fuel-saving percentage for a new Iveco model year. The latest maker-verified figure is the S-Way MY24 result of up to 10.54% lower consumption than MY22 ( Iveco press release, 2025-03-03 ). The S-eWay electric tractor offers up to 600 km from a 603 kWh battery with 350 kW DC charging ( Iveco Austria press release, 2025-06-13 ).

Which rules are driving the 2027 updates?

Three EU regulations frame the 2027 updates, and each has a different date.

Euro 7 for heavy-duty vehicles, Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, applies to new types from 2028-05-29 and to all new heavy vehicles from 2029-05-29 ( EUR-Lex ). On 2026-10-20 ACEA asked for a two-year delay, which would move the dates to 2030 and 2031. That is a request only, and the current law has not changed ( trans.info, 2026-10-20 ).

The General Safety Regulation, (EU) 2019/2144, has required an advanced driver distraction warning on all new registrations since 2026-07-07, trucks included ( EUR-Lex ). DAF's driver-monitoring feature sits in this area, though DAF's release does not tie it to the rule.

The heavy-duty CO2 standards, Regulation (EU) 2024/1610, require new heavy-duty vehicle CO2 to fall 45% from 2030, 65% from 2035 and 90% from 2040 against reference periods ( European Commission ). This target is the regulatory backdrop for the efficiency gains on diesel and the wider electric range seen across the makers.

Are gas and bio-LNG tractor units still worth ordering for 2027?

Gas is a narrow but real option, and Volvo is the only maker in this guide with a new gas engine for 2027. The G13 delivers 420 to 500 hp and is rated for bio-LNG. LNG and CNG trucks were 2.6% of new EU registrations in 2025, so the used-truck and service networks are smaller than for diesel (ACEA data, as in the opening paragraph).

Operating evidence is limited but concrete. A Swedish carrier, EMS Transport, ran a Scania 460 hp gas truck for 320,000 km in just over a year on long-distance work, with refuelling taking 15 to 20 minutes ( Scania newsroom, 2026-06-30 ). That is one customer story, not a new model. A gas tractor makes sense when your lanes pass reliable bio-LNG stations and you can secure the fuel price in writing.

Which 2027 update matters for your operation?

The right update depends on the lane profile, not on the badge. This section matches four common operations to the items that apply, without naming an overall winner.

  • Long-haul diesel on fixed lanes: the Volvo D13, the Mercedes-Benz Powerliner with OM 471 and G 291 gearbox, and the Renault DE13 R are the new engine options. Scania's Super 11 is an 11-litre option with HVO across the range. Ask each dealer for the comparison basis behind any percentage and for a trial on your own route.
  • Gas or bio-LNG: Volvo's G13 and Scania's gas trucks apply, provided fuelling stations sit on your corridors.
  • Mega trailers: the Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 / 400 Lowliner is built for this, with series production at Woerth from Q2 2027.
  • Early electric: the MAN eTGX, Scania's 720 kWh option, the Renault E-Tech T 780 and the DAF XG Electric all publish range above 500 km. Match them to your daily distance and depot charging, and read the electric tractor unit comparison before shortlisting.

Fleets that run mixed lanes can calculate electric versus diesel cost per kilometre before they commit.

Should you order now or wait for the next model year?

Order now if your current trucks are due for replacement and the model you want is already in sales. Wait if you want the new Mercedes-Benz OM 471 rating, which reaches vehicles from April 2027, or the Scania 720 kWh battery option, which arrives early 2027. The Renault T High 2027 has no stated sales date, so ask for it in writing.

Compare offers on total cost of ownership rather than on claimed fuel savings. Diesel price is the largest variable, so check current diesel prices by country when you model running costs. Once the trucks are in service, a TMS lets you track cost per truck and utilisation and see whether the claimed saving shows up in your own data. For lane-level estimates before you buy, the freight calculator gives a quick cost reference.

Frequently asked questions

Which new diesel engines arrive for tractor units in 2027?

Volvo has the D13 (380 to 560 hp), Mercedes-Benz has the revised OM 471 and OM 470 from April 2027, and Renault Trucks has the DE13 R with up to 540 hp. The DAF release names no new diesel engine, Scania's newsroom shows only the Super 11 five-cylinder, and MAN has published no verified engine figure.

Are the fuel-saving percentages comparable between makers?

No. Volvo quotes a simulation of an FH 500 at 35 t, Mercedes-Benz compares two model numbers of the Actros L, and Scania compares the Super 11 with its own 9-litre engine. They are maker claims, so treat them as a starting point for a trial rather than a ranking.

When do the Euro 7 rules start for trucks?

Under current law, Euro 7 applies to new heavy-duty vehicle types from 2028-05-29 and to all new heavy vehicles from 2029-05-29. ACEA requested a two-year delay on 2026-10-20, but that request has not changed the law.

Is a driver distraction warning mandatory on new trucks?

Yes. Since 2026-07-07 an advanced driver distraction warning is required on all new registrations under the General Safety Regulation (EU) 2019/2144, trucks included. DAF offers Drowsiness and Distraction Detection, though its release does not say the feature was built for this rule.

Which makers show no new 2027 engine in their releases?

The DAF release names no new diesel engine, Scania's newsroom shows no new 13-litre engine, and Iveco has published no verified MY2026 fuel figure. The latest verified Iveco figure is the S-Way MY24 result of up to 10.54% against MY22.

Where can I find the electric tractor units?

Each maker has an electric tractor in the maker sections above, with maker-stated ranges between 500 km and 720 km. The electric tractor unit comparison linked earlier covers batteries, charging and payload in detail.
