How do you check a truck stop before you sleep there?
Check the stop in five steps. First, ask for the certification level: look for a named EU SSTPA level on the operator website and ask to see the certificate. For TAPA PSR (Parking Security Requirements), only the independently audited route counts as formal certification.
Second, look at the perimeter: a real fence with a barrier at entry and exit is not the same as a boundary marked on the ground. Third, check lighting and cameras when you arrive, not only in listing photos. Fourth, find out who is on site at night, because a camera nobody watches protects very little.
Fifth, treat a free motorway rest area as unverified unless it states a security level. Cargo theft is a live risk: TAPA EMEA recorded 5,719 new cargo crimes across 51 countries in March 2026 alone, and only five happened at certified secure parking, according to trans.info . The location was unknown for 77.15 percent of incidents, so treat the figure with care.
What do the SSTPA security levels mean for a driver?
The four SSTPA levels come from Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/1012 , adopted on 2022-04-07. Operators choose a level by the value of goods they protect, and every level also needs showers, toilets, food and internet. Our guide to the EU safe and secure truck parking regulation covers the legal basis.
| SSTPA level | What it means for a driver |
|---|---|
| Bronze | Marked perimeter with no fence required, video surveillance at entry and exit, regular checks. |
| Silver | Physical deterrent at the perimeter, barriers at entry points, continuous monitoring, 24/7 user assistance. |
| Gold | Proper perimeter fence, CCTV over the whole perimeter, number-plate recognition at entry and exit. |
| Platinum | Manned or video-controlled 24/7, hardened gate, two-step driver identification, pre-booking required. |
Parking space is still short: a European Commission study published on 2025-04-11 found an EU gap of 390,057 truck parking spaces , about 3,250 areas. Expect uncertified stops on some routes and apply the same five checks there.
Can a free tool tell you whether a stop is safe?
No. A map can only show which facts are on record. The free Logifie parking map needs no account. Its detail card shows, where the source data has them, whether a site is fenced, lit, covered by CCTV and guarded, plus its SSTPA level. Logifie does not inspect sites or guarantee safety, and the map has no booking or live occupancy.
For Germany, live occupancy for about 1,850 motorway rest areas helps you avoid arriving at a full site late at night, but it says nothing about security. Our note on rest area patrols against cargo theft in Germany covers the risk side.
Frequently asked questions
What is the safest truck parking in Europe?
The safest option is a site with a named high certification level, such as EU SSTPA gold or platinum, or TAPA PSR with independent certification. Confirm the certificate with the operator before you rely on it.
What is the difference between TAPA and EU SSTPA certification?
SSTPA is the EU standard with four levels, set by Delegated Regulation 2022/1012. TAPA PSR is an industry standard with three routes, and only the independently audited one gives formal certification.
Is a free rest area safe for sleeping overnight in a truck?
Not by default. Treat it as unverified unless it states a security level, and check the fence, lighting, CCTV and night monitoring yourself.
