Four regulation-driven shifts shape TMS trends for 2027. First, eFTI (electronic freight transport information) data exchange, because authorities must accept eFTI data from 2027-07-09. Second, voluntary emissions accounting under CountEmissionsEU, in force since 2026-06-01 and based on ISO 14083. Third, smart tachograph v2 data in dispatch. Fourth, carbon-cost planning for ETS2 from 2028.

What are the main TMS trends for 2027?

The main trends are the ones with a legal date, and each asks something specific of a TMS (transport management system).

The European Commission states that from 2027-07-09 Member State authorities must accept freight transport information shared electronically through certified platforms under the eFTI Regulation . The Commission plans the remaining specifications, including platform certification, by December 2026. Our eFTI guide for road freight covers the rules.

Regulation (EU) 2026/1030 entered into force on 2026-06-01. It sets EN ISO 14083:2023 as the method for companies that choose to disclose transport emissions, as IRU explained when the rules were adopted . Our CountEmissionsEU explainer has the background.

Under the Commission's smart tachograph news of 2025-08-19 , vehicles over 3.5 t in international transport need version 2 from 2025-08-19. LCVs over 2.5 t follow from 2026-07-01. Member States with remote detection equipment can use transmitted data to target roadside checks.

The Council approved the amended Climate Law on 2026-03-05, which moves ETS2 for road fuels from 2027 to 2028 (Council press release). Fuel-cost forecasts and surcharge clauses will need a carbon line.

Which TMS trends are legal deadlines and which are vendor opinion?

Everything in the table has a date. AI dispatch does not, so read it as a direction vendors are taking. No official statistic on AI use among European carriers was found, so treat any adoption percentage as a vendor claim.

What should a carrier check in a TMS before 2027-07-09?

Ask four questions of any system you use or plan to buy. First, can it exchange consignment data with a certified eFTI platform, and what is the vendor timeline while certification rules are still pending? Second, does it store fuel use and load factors per shipment, the primary data emissions accounting needs? Third, can it bring tachograph data into dispatch? Fourth, can quotes carry a carbon cost line from 2028?

Our guide on how to choose a TMS as a small carrier adds the commercial checks.

Frequently asked questions

What are the latest trends in transport management systems?

For 2027 the main trends are eFTI data exchange, ISO 14083 emissions accounting, smart tachograph v2 data and ETS2 carbon costs. AI-assisted dispatch is a vendor direction without a legal date.

Will a TMS need to support eFTI from 2027?

The regulation obliges authorities to accept eFTI data from 2027-07-09. The Commission page does not state that carriers must use it. A TMS that can exchange data with certified platforms keeps that option open.

Is AI dispatch worth it for a small carrier?

No official adoption data settles the question. Ask the vendor for a pilot on your own lanes and compare it with your current planning.

Does a TMS replace e-CMR?

No. E-CMR is the electronic consignment note under the CMR protocol, while a TMS is software that can create, store and share it.
