Trucks over 12 t and trucks with a trailer are limited to 80 km/h on Italian motorways and 70 km/h on other roads outside towns ( Codice della strada art. 142 ). Trucks of 3.5 to 12 t may drive 100 km/h on motorways, but the EU 90 km/h limiter caps them at 90.
What are the truck speed limits in Italy by weight?
Italy sets truck limits by weight and road type. These figures come from art. 142 paragraph 3, in force since 2024-12-14.
| Vehicle | Limit |
|---|---|
| 3.5 to 12 t | 80 km/h outside built-up areas, 100 km/h on motorways |
| Over 12 t | 70 km/h outside built-up areas, 80 km/h on motorways |
| Motor vehicle with trailer | 70 km/h outside built-up areas, 80 km/h on motorways |
| Built-up area | 50 km/h |
Online pages disagree between 80 and 100 km/h, and the weight class explains the split. A truck of 3.5 to 12 t may legally drive 100 km/h, yet EU rules require N2 and N3 vehicles to carry a limiter set to 90 km/h (Directive 92/6/EEC, as amended by Directive 2002/85/EC). Our guide explains why trucks are limited to 90 km/h in the EU , and the HGV speed limits by country guide covers the rest of Europe.
How much is the fine for a truck speeding in Italy?
Fines rise with the excess speed. Up to 10 km/h over costs 42 to 173 EUR. Over 10 and up to 40 km/h costs 173 to 694 EUR and 3 points. Over 40 and up to 60 km/h costs 543 to 2,170 EUR, 6 points and a licence suspension of 1 to 3 months. Above 60 km/h the fine is 845 to 3,382 EUR, with 10 points and a suspension of 6 to 12 months.
Amounts follow art. 142 paragraphs 7 to 9-bis, and points follow the Polizia di Stato penalty table , which is undated. Under art. 195 paragraph 2-bis, the fines increase by one third when the offence happens between 22:00 and 07:00.
Under art. 207, a foreign-registered driver can pay the reduced sum on the spot or post a deposit, and without either the vehicle can be held for up to 60 days.
How does the Tutor speed camera system work for trucks?
Tutor measures average speed between two points on a motorway section. The Polizia Stradale manages it. The Polizia di Stato Tutor page , dated 2026-08-03, lists 204 sections covering about 1,987 km of carriageway as of May 2026.
For a truck, the practical rule is to hold the legal limit for your weight class over the whole section.
Frequently asked questions
What is the speed limit for trucks on Italian motorways?
Trucks over 12 t and motor vehicles with a trailer may drive 80 km/h. Trucks of 3.5 to 12 t may drive 100 km/h, but the 90 km/h EU limiter holds most of them to 90.
How does Tutor treat trucks?
Tutor measures average speed over whole motorway sections. Our sources do not say how it treats trucks, and we found no published tolerance for heavy vehicles, so hold your weight-class limit across the whole section.
Are speeding fines higher at night in Italy?
Yes. Art. 195 paragraph 2-bis raises art. 142 fines by one third when the offence is committed after 22:00 and before 07:00.
Do foreign trucks pay Italian speeding fines on the spot?
The driver may pay the reduced sum immediately. Without payment or a deposit, art. 207 allows the vehicle to be held for up to 60 days.
