Trucks over 3.5 t are limited to 80 km/h on Polish motorways (autostrada), expressways (droga ekspresowa) and dual carriageways with at least two lanes per direction, 70 km/h on other roads outside towns and 50 km/h in built-up areas, under Prawo o ruchu drogowym art. 20 . A speeding mandate (mandat) costs 50 to 2,500 PLN.
What is the truck speed limit in Poland?
Article 20 sets the limit by road type. In built-up areas every vehicle is limited to 50 km/h. Outside them, a truck over 3.5 t may drive 80 km/h on a motorway, an expressway or a dual carriageway with at least two lanes per direction, and 70 km/h on every other road. The consolidated text is Dz.U. 2024 poz. 1251, and later amendments have not changed these truck figures.
Vehicles up to 3.5 t follow a different scale. They may drive 140 km/h on a motorway, which leaves a 60 km/h gap to a heavy truck on the same road.
EU Directive 92/6/EEC, amended in 2002, requires N2 and N3 trucks to carry a speed limiter set to 90 km/h. That is 10 km/h above the Polish motorway limit, so the device will not stop a driver from speeding. Our guide explains why trucks are limited to 90 km/h in the EU . For other countries, see the HGV speed limits by country guide .
How much is a speeding mandate for a truck in Poland?
The mandate scale is fixed by a Prime Minister regulation of 2021-12-30, Dz.U. 2021 poz. 2484 , in force since 2022-01-01. A 2023 amendment changed only the overtaking rows, so the speeding rows still apply. As of 2026-11-06 the scale has ten bands, from 50 PLN for up to 10 km/h over to 2,500 PLN for 71 km/h and more.
| Over the limit | Mandate (PLN) |
|---|---|
| 11 to 15 km/h | 100 |
| 21 to 25 km/h | 300 |
| 31 to 40 km/h | 800 (1,600 repeat) |
| 71 km/h and more | 2,500 (5,000 repeat) |
Repeat offences cost double. From the 31 km/h band upward, the same offence within 2 years doubles the mandate, so 800 PLN becomes 1,600 PLN and 2,500 PLN becomes 5,000 PLN. The bands below 31 km/h have no repeat amount in the scale.
How is the limit enforced on Polish motorways?
The Chief Inspectorate of Road Transport (GITD) runs the CANARD camera system, which includes section speed measurement. A section of the A4 between Kąty Wrocławskie and Pietrzykowice was connected on 2025-09-12, according to the GITD notice , and its signs show 80 km/h for trucks.
