All 13 public holiday days in Hungary in 2027 carry a truck ban, seven of them on weekdays. Trucks over 7.5 t are banned from 22:00 the evening before until 22:00 on each holiday. The longest blocks are Easter, from Thursday 25 March, and St Stephen's Day, from Thursday 19 August.
Which Hungarian holidays in 2027 carry a truck ban?
All of them. Government Decree 190/2008 bans trucks over 7.5 t maximum permitted mass from 22:00 on the previous day to 22:00 on every public holiday, and on every Sunday from 1 September to 30 June. In July and August the Sunday ban starts on non-working Saturdays at 15:00, but holidays keep the 22:00 window.
The holiday list sits in section 102 of the Labour Code , and Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday count as holidays on a Sunday. That makes 13 holiday days in 2027. Seven fall on weekdays: Friday 1 January, Monday 15 March, Friday 26 March, Monday 29 March, Monday 17 May, Friday 20 August and Monday 1 November.
Saturday holidays (1 May, 23 October and 25 December) get one unbroken ban. Under § 2 (2) of the decree it runs from 22:00 on Friday to 22:00 on Sunday, so 1 May means Friday 30 April to Sunday 2 May. Start times here are our calculation from the 22:00 previous-day rule in § 2 (1), so confirm them against the decree.
Which 2027 holidays create the longest bans?
St Stephen's Day, Friday 20 August 2027, gives the longest unbroken ban. In the summer period the ban runs without a break from Thursday 19 August at 22:00 to Sunday 22 August at 22:00, about 72 hours. Easter has a gap: the ban ends Friday 26 March at 22:00, Saturday 27 March is free until 22:00, and the ban then runs to Monday 29 March at 22:00.
These bans also cover international traffic, with one winter exception explained in the FAQ. If your route ends in Romania, check the Romanian holiday bans for 2027 . Open the Hungary 2027 holiday calendar to see every date.
Is 24 December a holiday in Hungary in 2027?
Not confirmed. As of 2026-11-06 the consolidated Labour Code lists 25 and 26 December but not 24 December. Pénzcentrum reports that Parliament passed a law on 2026-11-03 making it a holiday, but we could not verify it in Magyar Közlöny. If it takes effect, the ban would start Thursday 23 December at 22:00 instead of Friday 24 December at 22:00. Plan for the earlier Thursday start and recheck the Labour Code before you fix your December schedule.
Frequently asked questions
Are Euro 3 international trucks exempt from the Hungarian holiday ban?
Partly, by our reading of the decree. Between 4 November and 1 March, § 2 (3) of Decree 190/2008 lifts the winter restriction and the continuous-ban rule for Euro 3 or cleaner trucks in international traffic. In 2027 that window covers 1 January and Christmas, but not 15 March, 23 October or 1 November.
Does Hungary have working Saturdays in 2027?
No working Saturdays are confirmed for 2027. As of 2026-11-03 the 2027 working-day decree was not published, and Pénzcentrum expects no transferred rest days because no holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday. That is a forecast, not law.
Which goods are exempt from the Hungarian truck ban?
Decree 190/2008 exempts live animals and perishable food such as fresh milk, meat, bakery goods, fruit and vegetables. We read this from a summary, so check the exact conditions before relying on it for a load.
Can the Hungarian ban change at short notice?
Yes. Under § 3 of Decree 190/2008 the transport minister can suspend the ban in an emergency or extend it by up to two days, announced through electronic media. Check announcements before departure, and read the Hungary truck driving ban times and rules guide for the standing timetable.
