Hydrogen trucks in 2027: can you buy one yet?
Hydrogen trucks are not available in series volume in Europe in 2027: Daimler places a 100-unit small series and plans series production in the early 2030s.

In series volume, no. As of 2026-11-06, Daimler Truck places a small series of 100 Mercedes-Benz NextGenH2 fuel-cell tractors with selected customers from the end of 2026 and plans volume production in the early 2030s. Volvo plans a hydrogen combustion launch in Europe before 2030.
Can you buy a hydrogen truck in Europe yet?
Not in the way you can order a diesel or battery-electric tractor unit. Daimler Truck said on 2026-01-28 that it will build 100 NextGenH2 trucks at Wörth and place them with selected customers from late 2026. A small series for selected customers is not an open order book, so a general customer cannot order one. Daimler names the early 2030s for series production.
Volvo is at an earlier stage. Its Volvo Group release of 2026-04-01 reports on-road testing of a hydrogen combustion truck on public roads and a commercial launch in Europe before 2030. The page mentions no customer tests.
Many older pages still repeat 2027 targets that no maker source above supports. If you need a zero-emission tractor unit for delivery in 2027, compare the battery-electric trucks you can order now .
Which hydrogen trucks are running or in trials?
Four programmes matter in Europe. They use two different technologies. Daimler, Hyundai and Scania with Toyota use fuel cells, which turn hydrogen into electricity for an electric motor. Volvo tests hydrogen combustion, which burns hydrogen in an engine.
| Maker | Hydrogen truck | 2027 status |
|---|---|---|
| Daimler Truck | Mercedes-Benz NextGenH2 (fuel cell) | Small series of 100 for selected customers, volume production early 2030s |
| Volvo Trucks | Hydrogen combustion truck | On-road tests, commercial launch in Europe before 2030 |
| Hyundai | XCIENT Fuel Cell | 165 trucks running in five countries, no series order terms stated |
| Scania with Toyota | Fuel-cell truck | Trial of 40 trucks from Q1 2027 |
Hyundai runs the largest fleet in the table. Its release of 2026-02-05 counts 165 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks in Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Austria, with 20 million km reached in January 2026, but it does not state how fleets obtain them, so treat it as a working fleet and not as proof of open ordering.
Scania and Toyota announced a Pilot Partner programme on 2026-09-07. Forty trucks enter operation from Q1 2027 with selected Scania customers. That is a trial, not a sale.
What should a fleet plan around until the 2030s?
Plan on diesel and battery-electric HGV for orders placed now. Hydrogen is a pilot option. The sources above state no general order window before the early 2030s, and Hyundai states no order terms.
Check the new tractor unit updates for 2027 to see what you can specify for next year. Read the EU truck CO2 standards review for the rules your fleet will be measured against, which is the practical reason to watch hydrogen at all.
Frequently asked questions
Are there hydrogen trucks in series production in Europe?
No. Daimler is placing a small series of 100 NextGenH2 trucks with selected customers, and Hyundai runs 165 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks across five countries. Neither is series volume, and Daimler dates series production to the early 2030s.
When will Daimler hydrogen trucks reach series production?
Daimler Truck gave the early 2030s in its release of 2026-01-28. The 100 trucks delivered from the end of 2026 are a small series for selected customers, not a market launch.
What is the difference between a fuel-cell truck and a hydrogen combustion truck?
A fuel-cell truck converts hydrogen into electricity that drives an electric motor. A hydrogen combustion truck burns hydrogen in an engine. Daimler, Hyundai and Scania with Toyota use fuel cells, and Volvo tests combustion.
Has Volvo started customer tests of its hydrogen truck?
Volvo Group reported on-road testing on 2026-04-01 and mentioned no customer tests. It plans a commercial launch in Europe before 2030.
