Volvo Trucks won International Truck of the Year 2027 for its electric FH, FM and FMX range, including the FH Aero Electric. The award was presented on 2026-09-14 at IAA Transportation in Hanover by a jury of 24 journalists, who credited longer range and multiple cab and chassis configurations.

In this title, "range" means the model line-up as well as driving distance.

What is International Truck of the Year?

International Truck of the Year is a European award decided by a jury of 24 commercial vehicle journalists, according to transport-online.de (2026-09-16) . The official finalists page lists the criteria: technological innovation, comfort, safety, driveability, energy efficiency, environmental performance and total cost of ownership.

Five trucks reached the 2027 final: the Iveco S-eWay, the Ford F-Max, the MAN eTGM, the Mercedes-Benz eArocs 400 and Volvo's electric range. Vote points and a runner-up were not found in the sources checked, so this post quotes no ranking below first place.

Battery-electric trucks have won four years running, from 2024 to 2027.

Why did Volvo's electric range win?

The jury credited breadth alongside distance. The Volvo Group release (2026-09-17) says the jury credited longer range together with multiple cab and chassis configurations. According to transport-online.de, jury chair Florian Engel called the series a significant development step for heavy battery-electric trucks. It is Volvo's eighth ITOY title.

The headline figures are Volvo claims: up to 700 km on one charge for the FH Aero Electric with extended range and up to 470 km for the standard FH, FM and FMX Electric. Test conditions are not published. On charging, Volvo states that the extended-range version accepts up to 700 kW through the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) and moves from 20 to 80% in 50 minutes.

What does the win mean for fleets?

An award is a jury opinion. Total cost of ownership is one of seven criteria, and the jury does not see your routes, your depot power supply or your contract rates. Treat the win as a reason to request a quote and a trial, then check three things: real range with your payload and season, access to a charger that matches the truck, and cost per kilometre against your current diesel tractor.

For that last step, compare electric truck and diesel TCO in Europe with our guide, which explains the cost lines, and current diesel prices by country give you the baseline fuel cost.
