French truck parking combines motorway aires, secure paid parks and roadside restaurants. A dynamic sign shows LIBRE, PAYANT, COMPLET or FERME at signed aires, and Bison Futé publishes truck parking locations, total spaces and prices, so check both before a night stop.
Where can a truck park on French motorways?
Bison Futé publishes two static files that list the location, total number of parking spaces and prices of truck parking areas. The file for concessioned motorways is dated 2025-03-19, and the file for non-concessioned motorways and national roads is dated 2018-11-08, so confirm older figures with the operator.
Fees differ by site. On aires with automatic occupancy counting and at least 10 truck spaces, a dynamic sign for vehicles over 3.5 t shows LIBRE for free spaces, PAYANT when the remaining spaces are paid, or COMPLET or FERME. The sign comes from an arrêté of 2020-05-06 ( Weblex, 2020-05-25 ). Where no sign is present, the fee model is not confirmed here, so check the Bison Futé file or the operator.
Weekend and holiday bans change when trucks stop. Check France truck driving ban times and rules before you plan the day.
To see listed parkings and fuel stations in France, open the free Logifie France parking map . It needs no login, and facilities appear in each location card where data exists. It shows no live occupancy for France, because live data covers only Germany. It is not a navigator and it does not take bookings. Verify details before you drive.
Aire, secure park or relais routier: which fits the stop?
Choose by the purpose of the stop.
| Option | What to know |
|---|---|
| Aire de repos or aire de service | Motorway stop; the fee model varies by site, so read the sign and the Bison Futé file |
| Secure paid park | Monitored site with a fee; ask the operator about capacity and price |
| Relais routier | A restaurant label, not a promise of truck parking; confirm with the site |
Secure paid parks differ by operator, so ask about capacity, price and surveillance before relying on one. For secure sites across Europe, read the guide to the safest truck parking in Europe .
Can a driver sleep in the cab in France?
A driver can take a daily rest in a suitably equipped stationary cab, but not the regular weekly rest. Article 8(8) of Regulation (EC) 561/2006, as amended in 2020, bars a regular weekly rest of 45 hours or more in the vehicle.
France attaches penalties to that rule. A company that organises drivers' work without ensuring the weekly rest is taken outside the vehicle risks one year in prison and a EUR 30,000 fine under article L3315-4-1 of the Code des transports. The driver faces a fifth-class contravention with a maximum fine of EUR 1,500 ( ecologie.gouv.fr, updated 2024-05-13 ).
Frequently asked questions
Where can I find truck parking in France?
Use the Bison Futé truck parking files, which list location, total spaces and prices for aires. For secure paid sites, check the operator directly, since capacity and fees vary.
Can I sleep in my truck on a French aire?
EU rules allow a daily rest in a suitably equipped stationary vehicle, while the regular weekly rest of 45 hours or more must be taken outside it. Whether an individual aire limits overnight stays is not confirmed here, so read the local signs and ask the operator.
Can I stop on the emergency lane to rest?
No. The emergency lane is for emergencies, not for rest, and article R412-8 of the Code de la route prohibits circulation on it.
Does a relais routier always have truck parking?
No. Relais Routiers began with the newspaper Les Routiers and labels roadside restaurants with a blue and red sign, which does not guarantee parking for an HGV. Ask the site before you plan a stop there.
