Backhaul from Bucharest is hard: on Logifie's freight balance map, built from Eurostat 2024 and 2025 data, Bucureşti-Ilfov loads 52 tonnes of cross-border road freight for every 100 tonnes it unloads, so a return load is harder to find. Sud-Vest Oltenia reaches 181 on a small base and Vest 115.

How hard is it to leave Bucharest loaded?
More freight arrives in Bucureşti-Ilfov than leaves it. Over 2024 and 2025 the region unloaded 3,623 thousand tonnes and loaded 1,866 thousand, which gives 52 and the hard to leave verdict (50 to 69). The value is steady between the two years.
Sud-Muntenia, the region around the capital, does not make up the difference. It scores 84 (slightly hard to leave), so a truck that drives out of Bucharest to look for freight nearby meets the same lean. The map describes this gap and does not explain it.
For scale, INS figures reported by Capital.ro put Romania's 2025 road freight at 329.4 million tonnes, of which international freight was 57.7 million tonnes (17.5%). These are national totals and cannot be compared with the regional ratio.
Where in Romania is a return load easier to find?
Mostly outside the capital belt. Sud-Vest Oltenia scores 181 (easy to reload), Nord-Est 132 and Vest 115 (both slightly easy to reload), with Nord-Vest at 110 (balanced).
| Region (NUTS-2) | Loaded per 100 unloaded (verdict) |
|---|---|
| Bucureşti-Ilfov | 52 (hard to leave) |
| Sud-Muntenia | 84 (slightly hard to leave) |
| Vest | 115 (slightly easy to reload) |
| Sud-Vest Oltenia | 181 (easy to reload) |
Volume changes how far to trust each number. Sud-Vest Oltenia unloaded only 987 thousand tonnes over the two years, so 181 rests on a small base. Vest carries far more: 5,539 thousand tonnes unloaded and 6,387 thousand loaded, though its badge reads mixed, so the two years differ. Nord-Est (969 thousand tonnes unloaded) also rests on a small base.
How should I read the number?
It is the tonnes loaded in a region for every 100 tonnes unloaded there, over 2024 and 2025. Below 100, more freight arrives than leaves. The tonnes are cross-border and foreign-truck freight, with domestic hauls by Romanian hauliers removed.
The count includes cabotage, meaning a foreign carrier's transport between two points inside one country. Regulation (EC) No 1072/2009 allows up to 3 such operations within 7 days of the last unloading of the incoming international carriage. Eurostat last updated the source tables on 2026-10-06; its methodology notes explain how places are coded.
The map is Logifie's own indicator, not an official ranking. It counts tonnes, not trucks. It does not convert tonnes into empty kilometres, waiting days or rates, and it promises no load on a given day. You can open the freight balance map page for the full method, or read how the map works across Europe . If your route leaves Romania, check the border truck queues at Nădlac, Giurgiu and Ruse .
Frequently asked questions
What is a return load (backhaul)?
It is freight carried on the way back, so the truck does not run empty. On Logifie's map, the figure for each Romanian region is the tonnes loaded there per 100 tonnes unloaded there.
Does a low number mean no loads from Bucharest?
No. At 52, less freight leaves Bucureşti-Ilfov than arrives, so reloading is harder, not impossible. The map promises no loads in either direction.
Is the map an official Eurostat ranking?
No. It is Logifie's freight balance map, built from Eurostat road freight data for 2024 and 2025. Eurostat publishes the underlying tables and does not publish this indicator.
Can I open the map without a code?
No. The interactive map opens with a 6-character code from the Logifie TikTok videos . The page text is open to all, and the region numbers are in this post.
